
Lady Flames Slip Against Terriers

The Liberty Lady Flames tennis squad fell to Boston University by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Palm Springs, Calif.
With the loss, Liberty falls to 5-7 on the season, while the Terriers improve to an even 5-5.
Once again, the Lady Flames claimed the doubles point for the eighth time in the last nine matches, taking an early 1-0 advantage. Liberty received wins from the No.1 and No. 3 doubles slots to earn the doubles point. Valerie Thong and Evangeline Crist bested Lauren Davis and Kim McCallum from the No. 1 slot, 6-2.
After Boston notched a victory from the No. 2 doubles position, Belen Rivera and Emily Groeneveld claimed the leading point after defeating Sabrina Faybyshev and Remi Ramos, 7-5.
The Terriers tied the contest at one apiece after Barbara Rodriguez bested Liberty's Rebekah Anderson in straight sets from the No. 6 singles slot, 6-1, 6-3.
Lady Flames' Mariely Hassey reclaimed the lead for the red and blue, downing McCallum in straight sets from the No. 5 singles slot, 6-3, 6-1.
The Terriers rebounded with back-to-back singles victories to claim the 3-2 advantage, notching victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions.
Rivera tied the contest at 3-3 from the No. 4 singles slot, setting up for a dramatic finish in the No. 3 singles position. Rivera bested Ramos in three sets, winning the first one 7-5 before falling in the second set by a score of 6-3. Rivera bounced back to sweep Ramos in the third set, 6-0.
The final match was decided in three sets, with the Terriers coming out on top. Boston's Faybyshev defeated Crist in three sets, falling in the first set by a score of 6-4. Faybyshev and Crist went toe-to-toe in the final two sets with the Boston freshman claiming both, 7-5, 6-4, to give the Terriers the 4-3 victory.
"A heartbreaking loss for us," stated head coach Jeff Maren. "We battled hard against a good Boston team but didn't play well enough to get the job done. We'll work hard to turn things around for our next match."
Liberty returns to action on Thursday in a doubleheader against Gonzaga (4 p.m. ET) and Toledo (7 p.m. ET). Both matches will be played in Palm Springs, Calif.
