With the Flames being midway through their annual bye week, LFSN reporter Nick Pierce recently had a chance to visit with Flames Head Football Coach Turner Gill.
The Flames are coming off a 41-7 win at home over Robert Morris, Liberty's eighth 30-point victory in five seasons under Gill. Both of Liberty's victories in 2016 have been sizeable, as the Flames also defeated Jacksonville, 55-7, on Sept. 10 at Williams Stadium.
Following the bye week, Gill will lead the Flames into Big South play. During his first four seasons at Liberty, Gill has posted a 16-6 conference record and claimed Big South titles in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Liberty's conference crown in 2014 was the most notable of the three Big South titles under Gill. The Flames knocked off No. 1 Coastal Carolina during the regular season finale to earn the program's first-ever NCAA FCS Playoffs appearance.
The Flames opened up the 2014 NCAA FCS Playoffs with a 26-21 win over No. 15/15 James Madison before falling 29-22 to No. 5/5 Villanova in the second round.
Following the Flames' annual bye week, Liberty begins Big South play on the road when the Flames travel to Kennesaw, Ga., to face Kennesaw State. Kickoff from Fifth Third Bank Stadium is set for 7 p.m. on Oct. 15.
