
Flames Conclude Play at USTA Futures

For the second consecutive week, the Liberty men's tennis squad competed in the USTA Futures tournament this weekend, this time in Laguna Niguel, Calif.
Sam Matheson and Alex Poynter represented Liberty in this tournament. Poynter notched the Flames' lone win of the tournament in the first round, besting Bryan Mehall in three sets, 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-4. Poynter then fell to Serbian native, Miomir Kecmanovic, in straight sets by a score of 6-1, 6-3.
Matheson fell in straight sets despite taking Hendrik Jebens of Germany down to the wire. Matheson forced a final game in both sets, falling 7-6(4), 7-6(4).
Liberty returns to action on Friday when the Flames will compete in a split weekend. Liberty will be represented at the ITA All-American tournament in Tulsa, Okla. The Flames will also send representatives to Elon, N.C., competing in the Elon Invitational.
