Liberty Athletics celebrated another highly successful year of academics, athletics and community service at the fourth annual FLAMESPY Award show on April 27.
After the show, Liberty Flames Sports Network's Nick Pierce had a chance to catch up with some of the evening's award winners, including Liberty baseball senior pitcher Shawn Clowers, who took home the Male Athlete of the Year Award.
Clowers is currently among the NCAA Division I national leaders in wins with a 9-3 record. He also leads the Big South in wins. The Axton, Va., native has posted a 2.86 ERA during a team-leading 15 appearances, becoming a fixture in Liberty's weekend pitching rotation. The left-hander has struck out 43 and walked 23 over a career-high 63 innings, this season.
Last year, Clowers was one of 36 semifinalists for the 2014 Gregg Olson "Breakout" Player of the Year Award, setting Liberty single-season record with a 0.83 ERA. A key member of Liberty's NCAA Regional Squad, the left-hander posted a 9-0 record with 48 strikeouts and 14 walks in a team and career-high 23. He finished third in the Big South Conference in wins, while setting personal single season highs ERA, appearances and strikeouts. He began 2014 by not allowing a run over first 24 1/3 innings of season.
