
Lady Flames Win Regular Season Finale

The Liberty Lady Flames capped off its record season on Thursday evening, downing Richmond, 5-2, in Richmond, Va. The Lady Flames moved their overall record to 18-4, the best in program history. With the loss, the Spiders fall to 11-6, having dropped four consecutive matches.
Liberty claimed two of the three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong defeated Brittany Boys and Katya Salas, 8-5, from the No. 2 doubles position to take the first contest needed to claim the doubles point.
Mariely Hassey and Emily Groeneveld collected the early 1-0 lead for the Lady Flames, as the duo bested Emily Gitman and Kelsey Williams, 8-5, from, the No. 3 doubles slot.
After the Spiders surrendered the doubles point, Richmond's Anna Morales defeated Hassey in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to even the match at one apiece.
Maria Khval recaptured the lead for the red and blue as the Belarus native cruised past Melissa Kandinata, 6-0, 6-3 for 2-1 Lady Flames' lead.
Freshman Evangeline Crist notched the third point for Liberty by defeating Boys, 6-1, 6-2, in No. 4 singles.
Senior Brittany Yang secured the win with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Salas. Yang's victory provided Liberty with a 4-1 lead to clinch the match.
With the contest already in hand, the Lady Flames and Spiders traded victories in the final two matches. The final Liberty victory came from Belen Rivera as the Bolivia native edged past Gaby Rosales, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6).
"The girls played well against strong competition," stated head coach Jeff Maren. "I was proud of our focus and also our ability to cut down on some of our unforced errors. This will definitely help to prepare us for conference"
Liberty returns to action at the Big South Championship in Asheville, N.C., which will begin on April 15.
