Liberty women's tennis senior Brittany Yang has been named the Big South Conference Choice Hotel Women's Tennis Player of the Week, while freshman Evangeline Crist was named the Crons Brand Freshman of the Week. Yang and Crist garner the award as announced by the conference office, for matches played from Feb. 23-March 1.
Yang, a Newnan, Ga., native captures her first player of the week honor of the season. Yang is the second Lady Flame to garner the award this year, with Belen Rivera collecting the award on Feb. 4.
Yang finished the week with a 1-0 singles record as well as a 2-0 doubles record for the Lady Flames. In Liberty's Big South opener against Longwood on Wednesday, Yang teamed up with Maria Khval to defeat Malin Allgurin and Paloma Alatorre, 8-5, from the No. 1 doubles slot. During Saturday's contest against then undefeated conference foe, UNC Asheville, Yang teamed up with Khval once again to defeat Emily McNall and Ericka Rivero, 8-5, from the No. 1 doubles position. The Georgia native then ousted Christine Boissevain from the No. 4 singles spot, 6-0, 6-3 to push the Liberty lead to 3-0.
Crist, also a Georgia peach, had a similar week to Yang. The Lilburn, Ga., native finished the week with a perfect 3-0 mark, including two doubles victories. This is Crist's third time corralling the freshman of the week honor, with the other times being Feb. 19 and Jan. 21.
In the 5-2 victory over Longwood in Wednesday's Big South opener, Crist competed with teammate Valerie Thong, defeating Anna Pelak and Nicole Parker, 8-0. During Saturday's contest against the undefeated Bulldogs, Crist and Thong once again placed Liberty ahead by defeating Christine Boissevain and Lauren Brooker, 8-2. With her second doubles victory of the week, Crist improved her doubles mark to 9-2 on the year.
With the match already secure and the Lady Flames ahead by a score of 5-0, Crist competed from the No. 5 singles slot and bested Amalie Davidsen in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Crist's singles victory stretched the lead to 6-0, and improved her team-best 8-1 singles record on the year.
The duo look to aid in improving on the women's tennis team's best start in program history this weekend when they travel to Elon, N.C. to take on Elon at 2:30 p.m. The Lady Flames will then hit the road for a West Coast bout against Pacific on March 10 and Cal Poly on March 12.
