The Liberty Flames men's tennis squad pulled off an impressive come from behind victory today against Coastal Carolina, downing the Chanticleers 4-3 in Lynchburg, Va. The Flames improve to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in Big South play with the win, while Coastal Carolina falls to 6-5 overall with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
The Chanticleers jumped ahead of the Flames after sweeping through doubles play, 3-0.
Rick Timmerman extended the Coastal Carolina lead to two when he dropped Jason Burgess, 6-2, 6-1 from the No. 6 singles slot.
Co-captain Jorge Azuero cut the Liberty deficit to one with his straight set victory over Vuk Velickovic from the No. 3 slot, 6-1, 6-4.
The Chanticleers responded with a singles victory of their own from the hands of Renan Samed, dropping Diego Castano in three hard fought sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Despite the 3-1 deficit, the Flames were not going to let Coastal Carolina walk away with a victory. Transfer sophomore Sam Matheson found himself deadlocked in a pivotal match for Liberty. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Matheson rebounded in the second set to cruise past Kaue Pereira by a score of 6-2. Battling back and forth in the third set, Matheson pulled ahead in the tiebreaker to win 7-6 (11-9).
Matheson's victory seemed to spark a fire under the Flames as Segur rallied to stay ahead of Phillipe Tsangarides, winning in two sets, 7-6(9-7), 6-4. Segur's victory evened the match at three apiece with Egon Samaai's match being the deciding factor.
Samaai handled Pedro Leme in the first set, 7-6, before falling in the second set by a score of 6-4. The South African native rebounded from the tough second set to cruise past Leme in the third set, 6-2, clinching the 4-3 come from behind victory for the red and blue.
Liberty returns to action tomorrow when the Flames host the Presbyterian Blue Hose at 1 p.m. at the Hershey-Esbenshade Tennis Courts.
