Lady Flames Blank Highlanders, 7-0

The Liberty women's tennis squad blanked the Highlanders of NJIT, 7-0 earlier this morning in Akron, Ohio.
With the win, Liberty continues its best start, improving to 5-1 on the campaign. With the loss, NJIT falls to 0-4.
The Lady Flames began the morning with a clean sweep through the doubles competition. Belen Rivera and Mariely Hassey bested Sydney Nowak and Valerie Carroll, 6-0, to begin doubles competition from the No. 3 position. Valerie Thong and Evangeline Crist secured the doubles point for the red and blue following their 6-1 ousting of Ines Vujkovac and Alba Rosas Garcia from the No. 2 slot.
The doubles tandem of Maria Khval and Brittany Yang capped off the strong start for the Lady Flames with a 6-2 victory against Carolina Zanotta and Nathalie Habegger from the No. 1 position.
Thong notched the second point for Liberty with a 6-1, 6-1 singles victory against Carroll from the No. 6 slot.
The Lady Flames' lead was extended to three after freshman standout Crist defeated Vujkovac in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Nicola Wellman clinched the fifth win of the season for Liberty with a straight set victory against Nowak from the No. 5 singles slot, 6-0, 6-1.
With the match already in hand for the Lady Flames, Liberty swept through the remaining singles contests, winning the final three matches.
Sophomore Emily Groeneveld secured a straight-set victory with ease over Rosas Garcia, 6-0, 6-1 to push the Lady Flames to a 5-0 lead. Senior Brittany Yang quickly extended the lead to six with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Habegger from the No. 2 singles slot.
Hassey capped the event off with a strong singles victory from the No. 1 position, 6-2, 6-3.
Liberty returns to action tomorrow when they take on host Akron at the Latuchie Tennis Center. The contest is slated to start at 10 a.m.
