For the second time this year, Liberty kicker John Lunsford has been named the Big South Special Teams Player of the week, as announced by the league office earlier today.
The junior helped the Flames to a 34-24 victory over Monmouth on Saturday, keeping Liberty unbeaten in Big South play (3-0).
Lunsford was successful on all four of his extra point attempts and finished the game with a pair of field goals (26 and 27 yards). His 27-yard field goal with 3:27 left in the game helped seal Liberty's home victory.
The Fort Myers, Fla., native is a perfect 37-of-37 on extra point attempts this season, helping him extend his school record to 93 consecutive extra points made.
Following the Monmouth game, Lunsford now ranks sixth in the country in scoring per game by a kicker (8.4). On the year, he is 10-of-14 on field goal attempts and leads the Big South with 1.25 field goals per game.
The junior also handled the Flames' kickoff duties against the Hawks, averaging 63.7 yards per kickoff. Five of his six kickoffs resulted in touchbacks.
This is the second time this year Lunsford has been named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week. He first received the honor following the Richmond game where he connected on a school record 60-yard field goal to send the game into overtime.
Lunsford and the Flames will close out the home portion of their 2014 schedule on Saturday when they welcome the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern. Kickoff from Williams Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m.
