The Flames Sports Hotline, a weekly radio call-in show spotlighting Liberty's football program, returns to the airwaves this evening at 7 p.m. The show is hosted weekly at Doc's and features Flames Head Coach Turner Gill and a different member of his coaching staff each week.
For the second year in a row, the Flames Sports Hotline will air weekly on the ESPNinVA network, which includes the following ESPN Radio stations in the Central Virginia area: 93.3 FM (Lynchburg), 106.3 FM (Danville), 1240 AM (Roanoke), 1320 AM (Lynchburg) and 1350 AM (Bedford).
The weekly show is hosted locally in Lynchburg on Liberty University's campus at Doc's, and the restaurant is open to the student body and the general public. The show is broadcast live throughout the 50's-style diner and fans are encouraged to participate during the call-in segments.
Alan York, the radio play-by-play broadcaster for football and men's basketball, hosts the call-in show, which features Liberty's third-year head football coach and will open this week with a segment with Flames' defensive coordinator and safeties coach Robert Wimberly.
During his first two years back at Liberty, Wimberly has had 13 players receive Big South all-conference accommodations, which is more than any other defensive unit in the league during that span of time.
Wimberly has instructed a top 20 ranked defense both seasons at Liberty. The Flames finished 2012 ranked No. 15 in the country in total defense (314.7 yards allowed per game) and No. 9 in 2013 (313.9). The Flames also ranked No. 5 in the country in scoring defense in 2013, as Liberty limited opposing offenses to 17.6 points per game.
Wimberly has helped the Flames post a pair of shutout victories in 2014 (Norfolk State and Gardner-Webb). Liberty has won its last seven Big South contests in a row and has limited opponents to 9.4 points per game in those contests.
Following the opening segment with Wimberly, York will welcome in Gill for the remainder of the hour-long show. Gill will recap Liberty's 34-24 victory over Monmouth, the Flames' fourth win in a row, plus preview the Flames' Senior Day matchup with Charleston Southern.
Following the first few segments with Gill, York will open up the phone lines and field questions from the radio listening audience or those seated inside Doc's. Fans unable to make it out to Doc's each Monday night may call in at (877) 401-9041 to participate in the weekly show.
Those not able to participate in the call-in portion of the show can also email their questions for Gill to LFSN@liberty.edu, prior to the start of the show.
Flames Nation fans can listen to the show locally by tuning their radio dials to any of the ESPNinVA network of stations in the Central Virginia area. The show will also air live online at LibertyFlames.com and can be heard by clicking on the link above.
