First and 10 – Saturday's Top Storylines
1. Both Liberty and Appalachian State will try to get back on track Saturday afternoon at Kidd Brewer Stadium in their first meeting since 2002. The Flames have lost two games in a row, while the Mountaineers have dropped three straight heading into their Homecoming tilt.
2. Saturday will mark the Flames' first-ever matchup against a Sun Belt Conference opponent on the gridiron.
3. Liberty is 2-7 against Appalachian State, with the Mountaineers winning five consecutive matchups since a 25-19 Flames victory in Boone on Nov. 22, 1997. (See page 3 of the game notes for more matchup notes.)
4. The Flames are in search of their third all-time win over an FBS opponent, with a 1989 victory at Eastern Michigan and a 2010 win at Ball State. (See page 4 of the game notes for more on what a Liberty win would mean.)
5. Darrin Peterson has recorded four straight 100-yard receiving games and needs one more to tie Pat Nelson's (1990-91) program record streak. (See page 4 of the game notes for other milestones within reach on Saturday.)
6. Liberty has been turnover-free in its three wins this season, but is -5 in the turnover battle in its three losses. See page 5 of the game notes for more team notes and trends.
7. On Monday, QB Josh Woodrum was named Big South Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. (See page 6 of the game notes for more notes on Woodrum's impressive junior season to date.)
8. K John Lunsford earned multiple honors after his record-breaking 60-yard field goal which sent the Richmond game to OT. (See page 7 of the game notes for more notes on Lunsford.)
9. RB D.J. Abnar recorded his third career 100-yard rushing performance versus Richmond. See page 9 of the game notes for a complete list of the current Flames' 100 and 300-yard games.
10. CB Tyrin Holloway and S Avery "A.J." James both made their first career starts in the Richmond game. See page 12 of the game notes for the Flames' updated start charts.
"4 Downs" with the Mountaineers
1 - Saturday's game will mark Liberty's first-ever matchup against a Sun Belt Conference opponent. It will also be the Flames' first game against Appalachian State since Sept. 21, 2002 and Liberty's first visit to Boone since Sept. 1, 2001.
2 - This will be Liberty's second game against an FBS opponent in 2014, after the Flames opened the year with a 56-29 loss at North Carolina on Aug. 30. Liberty also faced a pair of FBS foes in 2013, including Kent State and Old Dominion.
3 - Liberty is in search of its third victory over Appalachian State. Both of the Flames' previous wins over the Mountaineers have come at Kidd Brewer Stadium, in 1993 and 1997. The Flames are also seeking their third win all-time versus an FBS opponent. The Flames recorded a 25-24 win at Eastern Michigan on Oct. 14, 1989 and a 27-23 triumph at Ball State on Sept. 11, 2010.
4 - Liberty is facing four North Carolina-based squads during the 2014 season, including North Carolina, Brevard, Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb. The Flames are 1-1 against Tar Heel State teams thus far, with a win over Brevard and a loss to North Carolina. That pushes Liberty's all-time record against North Carolina-based teams to 36-45-3.
Milestone Watch
1 - Jacob Hagen needs one interception to become the fifth Flame ever to pick off 10 or more career passes.
5 - D.J. Abnar needs five rushing yards to reach 1,000 for his career.
11 - With 11 tackles, Jacob Hagen will become the first Flame to total 200 career tackles since Nick Hursky graduated with 270 stops in 2008.
12 - Bryant Lewellyn is 12 tackles shy of 100 for his career. He would become the fourth active Flame with 100 or more career stops, joining Nick Sigmon (199), Jacob Hagen (189) and Kenny Scott (135).
100 - Darrin Peterson has recorded four straight 100-yard receiving games. If he reaches the century mark on Saturday, Peterson will tie Pat Nelson's program record of five consecutive 100-yard outings, spanning the 1990 and 1991 seasons (Nov. 10, 1990 through Oct. 5, 1991).
246 - Josh Woodrum needs 246 passing yards to overtake Antwan Chiles (1993-95, 6,336 career yards) for fourth place in program history.
A Liberty Win Would ...
• Mark the Flames' third all-time victory against an FBS opponent, following wins over Eastern Michigan (25-24 in 1989) and Ball State (27-23 in 2010).
• Be Liberty's first triumph over Appalachian State since a 25-19 victory in Boone on Nov. 22, 1997.
• Improve the Flames' all-time record against Appalachian State to 3-7 and snap Liberty's five-game losing skid in the head-to-head series with the Mountaineers.
• End the Flames' two-game losing streak and help them avoid their first run of three straight losses since Liberty dropped five games in a row between Nov. 19, 2011 and Sept. 22, 2012.
• Give the Big South Conference back-to-back wins over Appalachian State. Charleston Southern notched a 27-24 victory in Boone on Sept. 28, 2013.
