Liberty freshman Mariely Hassey started out her collegiate career on a high note, earning the first Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week award of the 2014 season. Hassey garners recognition from her performances in matches played between Jan. 13-19.
Hassey helped contribute to two Liberty victories this past Saturday at the Greenbriar Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. The Lady Flames knocked off Morehead State, 6-1, before downing North Carolina Central by another 6-1 final tally.
In Liberty's season-opening win against Morehead State, Hassey posted a 7-6 (4), 6-0 victory against Dominique McLean in the No. 3 singles spot. Versus NCCU, Hassey notched a win in doubles play with partner Annisha Domenech. The pair made quick work of NCCU's Tamara Jeremic and Lynsey Cover, 6-1. Hassey followed up her doubles win with another straight-set singles victory in the No. 3 position against NCCU's Ekaterina Nekrasova, 6-0, 6-4.
Hassey and the rest of the Lady Flames resume play on Feb. 25 against Big 12 foe West Virginia. The contest is slated to begin at 3 p.m. at the Charleston Indoor Racquet Club in Charleston, W.Va.
