Liberty Advances with 4-1 Win Over Coastal Carolina

For the second consecutive season, No. 4 seed Liberty squared off against No. 5 seed Coastal Carolina in the quarterfinals of the Big South Women's Tennis Championship. The Lady Flames avenged last season's 4-0 loss by downing the Chanticleers 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Winthrop Memorial Tennis Courts. Liberty advances to face No. 1 seed Winthrop in the semifinal round tomorrow at 10 a.m.
"In the beginning of the season we set a goal to peak at the conference tournament," commented Liberty head coach Jeff Maren. "Today we saw the fruits of our labor as the team played well from start to finish. I couldn't be more proud of our girls and am already looking forward to the opportunity to play a very good Winthrop team in the semifinals."
Liberty's second win in as many matches against Coastal Carolina this season improves its overall season record to 11-10. The victory snaps a four-match losing skid versus the Chanticleers in the Big South Women's Tennis Championship.
The Lady Flames opened the match with a win in two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 1 position, Rebekah Jenkins and Nicola Wellman delivered a convincing 8-2 win against Shelby Bates and Kourtney Kowal. The Chanticleers' Mikaela Davies and Libby Scott defeated Cameron Richard and Valerie Thong, 8-4, to even the doubles' contests at one apiece. Brittany Yang and Jessie Boda clinched the doubles tally for Liberty with an 8-4 victory versus Vanessa Ortiz and Alicia Robinson.
The Lady Flames quickly extended their lead to 3-0 after straight-set wins in the No. 6 and No. 3 singles spots. Annisha Domenech bested Ortiz, 6-2, 6-2, before Wellman ousted Davies, 6-2, 6-3.
Coastal Carolina's lone point of the afternoon came when Scott outlasted Richard, 6-4, 6-3, in the No. 1 position.
In the No. 5 spot, Yang collected Liberty's third straight-set win of the afternoon, downing Robinson 6-2, 6-4 to clinch the contest for the Lady Flames.
With the match already decided, the No. 2 and No. 4 matches were ruled unfinished.
