After recording a career-best 14 singles wins for the Liberty men's tennis team this spring, Siim Tuus has concluded his junior season with a No. 16 ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic Region. Having an individual end the year with a regional ranking is a first for the Flames' program, while the team previously finished the 2010 season with a No. 10 ranking in the Atlantic Region.
The region, which was formed by the ITA after realignment for the 2009-10 season, includes 27 men's programs. The computer-based rankings take the individual's best wins from the year into consideration, including matches from ITA sanctioned tournaments and dual competition.
The Rakvere, Estonia native led Liberty to a 15-8 record in 2012, the second-best win total in program history. Tuus held down the No. 1 slot in both singles and doubles, recording 14 wins in both formats.
At year's end, the junior earned Big South All-Conference Singles recognition for the third straight season, while also taking his first honors as a Big South All-Conference Doubles selection. With the pair of recognitions, Tuus became the first Liberty men's tennis player to be named to both all-conference listings since Ricardo Shinozaki in 2001.
This season, Tuus moved up on Liberty's all-time wins lists, as he currently ranks second in career singles victories (55) and fourth in career doubles victories (53).
Despite losing three seniors, the Flames will look forward to another strong season in 2012-13. Tuus will return for his senior campaign, in addition to a strong supporting roster including a balance of juniors and sophomores.
