22nd Annual Liberty Athletics Golf Tournament Draws 168 Participants

The 22nd Annual Ford Mays Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament was successfully contested at London Downs Golf Club in Forest, Va., on June 8. A group of 168 golfers battled for prizes in morning and afternoon flights. There were 15 teams that played in the morning and 27 in the afternoon.
The winning team was captained by Bill Robertson. He was partnered with William Robertson, Warren Otey and John Thompson. Their team carded a 51 (21-under par) to tie for the event with the Harris Corporation team of John Simmons, Tim Hahn, Glenn Eagle and Ronnie Eagle. The winning team was declared based upon a card playoff back from 18; they won with an eagle on hole 14.
The third-place team (55) from Licensing Resource Group was captained by Liberty golf coach Jeff Thomas and included Liberty basketball coach Dale Layer, Lewis Hardy and Brian Eubank. All four top flight winners came from the afternoon flight with the Ford Mays Wealth Management team (Jesse Stephens, Chris Long, Jonathan Bathe and Stephen Spraker).
Skill prizes were awarded for two longest putts, one longest/straightest drive, four longest drives on each par five and four closest to the pins on each par three.
Four flights were awarded prizes on the day with a total of 12 team winners crowned. In addition, more than 50 golfers received door prizes (supplied by Lynchburg area businesses) for such things as dinners at quality dining establishments, golf equipment, hotel packages and Liberty apparel. Every participant received a substantial gift bag which included a Liberty golf polo, tournament golf balls, gift certificates and coupons supplied by sponsors.
Sponsorship support for this event continues to grow each year. Major sponsors included Ford Mays Wealth Management (title), Panera Bread (driving range), Prototype (ball), LU Bookstore (shirt), SLAIT Consulting (putting green), Branch & Associates (hole-in-one), Cisco (bag drop), Chick-fil-A (gift), Centra Health (cart sponsors), and LU Dining Services (drinks).
Proceeds from the Ford Mays Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament are used to finance special projects within the athletics department. Proceeds from the 2006 and 2007 tournaments were used to install two points-fouls boards at the Vines Center. Proceeds from the 2008 tournament went toward the conversion of the scoreboard system in the arena to fully wireless and the 2009 funds helped purchase the 38-foot floor video board at the Vines Center. Proceeds from 2010 and 2011 helped with the Osborne Stadium video board.
The date for the 23rd Annual Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament has been tentatively set for June 7, 2013.
