2010-11 Learfield Sports Director's Cup - Final Standings
For the third year in a row, the Liberty University Athletics Department climbed up the standings in the final Division I Learfield Sports Director's Cup.
Liberty finished No. 109 in the latest national listing compiled by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of American (NACDA) for the 2010-11 academic year. It marks the fourth-consecutive year Liberty has ranked inside the Top 125 in the annually listing that ranks the best Division I athletics programs in the country.
Liberty finished the 2010-11 academic year by compiling 152.25 points, allowing Liberty to finish No. 109 out of 335 NCAA Division I programs.
Liberty's standing was bolstered by eight programs winning Big South titles, two individual NCAA national champions and several individual student-athletes who participated in the NCAA postseason in four different sports (men's cross country, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track and wrestling).
The 2010-11 ranking is the second-best in Athletics Department history, with the best coming in 2001-02 when Liberty finished No. 82 (217.50 points). During the last four years, each of which the Flames captured the Big South Sasser Cup title, Liberty finished No. 115 in 2009-10, No. 120 in 2008-09 and No. 110 in 2007-08.
Columbia, of the Ivy League, finished just ahead of the Flames at No. 108 with 156.00 points, while Liberty edged out Atlantic 10 member Dayton, who finished No. 110 with 152.00 points.
Of the 14 NCAA Division I programs inside the Commonwealth of Virginia, Liberty finished fifth among state schools. Virginia finished in the Top 10 for the third year in a row at No. 7 with 1092.00 points, followed by Virginia Tech at No. 45 with 500.50 points.
Stanford claimed its 17th-straight Director's Cup title, as the Cardinal finished the year with 1550.25 points.
The Learfield Sports Director's Cup, now in its 18th year of existence, was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and the USA Today. Points are awarded based on each Division I institution's finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women's and 10 men's.
