Record Number of Golfers Take Part in 21st Annual Athletics Golf Tournament

The 21st Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament was successfully contested at London Downs Golf Club in Forest, Va., on June 10. A record group of 196 golfers battled for prizes in morning and afternoon flights. There were 26 teams that played in the afternoon and 23 in the morning.
The winning team was captained by LU co-founder Dr. Elmer Towns. He and his partners (Phil Ayers, Joey Phillips and Austin Inman) scorched the course with a 49 (23-under-par). The second place team played for Carter Bank (Ernest Carter, Steve Smith, Wright Garrett and Doug Kendrick) and turned in a 52. The team from Mail America (Mickey Moore, Stanley Ore, Phil Ore and Gerald Basham) carded a 53 to place third and win the morning flight.
Skill prizes were awarded for longest putt, four longest drives and four closest to the pins on each par three.
Four flights were awarded prizes on the day with a total of 12 team winners crowned. In addition, more than 55 golfers received door prizes (supplied by Lynchburg area businesses) for such things as dinners at quality dining establishments, golf equipment, hotel packages and Liberty apparel. Every participant received a substantial gift bag which included a Liberty golf shirt, tournament golf balls, gift certificates and coupons supplied by sponsors.
Sponsorship support for this event continues to grow each year. Major sponsors included Chick-fil-A Wards Road (title), Panera Bread (presenting/practice tee), Prototype (ball), Ford Mays Wealth Management (shirt), Cisco (bag drop), Centra Health (cart sponsors), and Sodexo/LU Dining (drinks).
Proceeds from the Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament are used to finance special projects within the athletics department. Proceeds from the 2006 and 2007 tournaments were used to install two points-fouls boards at the Vines Center. Proceeds from the 2008 tournament went toward the conversion of the scoreboard system in the arena to fully wireless and the 2009 funds helped purchase the 38-foot floor video board at the Vines Center. Proceeds from 2010 helped with the Osborne Stadium video board.
The date for the 22ndAnnual Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament has been tentatively set for June 8, 2012.
