The Liberty women's tennis team completed its fall tournament schedule this weekend at the Hokie Fall Invitational, which was contested at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Va.
Doubles play highlighted the event, as two Liberty duos posted multiple victories. Sophomores Rebekah Jenkins and Cameron Richard won a pair of matches in the Flight A draw, while senior Carol Lobel and freshman Nicola Wellman competed in the Flight B draw, earning three victories.
In singles play, Lobel, Wellman and Jessie Boda each posted 2-2 records.
Jenkins and Richard opened the event with an 8-5 win over Big South opponents, Petra Dajevic and Mia Drobnjak of Radford. After a pair of default matches, the Lady Flame pair finished the weekend with a win over Wofford's Othilia Lindqvist and Julia Paulson, 9-7.
Lobel and Wellman dropped their opening match, 8-4 to Lindsay Dvorak and Hila Elster of Tulane. The senior-freshman pair then rolled off three consecutive victories, to win the consolation draw. Their closest match came against Wofford's Emily Przystawski and Lucy Schermerhorn, an 8-6 victory. The duo wrapped up the backdraw with 8-2 and 8-3 victories, defeating UMBC's Isabel Aldunate and Heidi Danielsson and Elon's Briana Berne and Katy Canada.
Wellman also had success in her Flight C singles draw, posting a pair of victories in the championship side of the bracket. The Spring Hill, Fla., native began with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kynaky Hadji of UMBC. Wellman then defeated Tulane's Elster, 6-4, 6-2, before falling to opponents from Virginia Tech and East Tennessee State.
Lobel, competing in the Flight B singles draw, dropped her opening match against Karina Kedzo of East Tennessee State, then posted a pair of victories in the backdraw. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, native knocked off Othilia Lindqvist, 7-5, 6-2 for her first victory. Next, Lobel defeated Aldunate of UMBC, 7-6 (4), 7-5. In the consolation final, Lobel fell in an eight-point breaker set to Radford's Hannah Crawford, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (8).
Boda's pair of victories came in the Flight D singles draw. After dropping her opening two matches, the sophomore defeated Radford's Sara Tegner, 6-2, 6-0 and Tulane's Emily Dvorak, 6-1, 6-4.
With the fall season complete, the Lady Flames will begin to prepare for their spring schedule. Last year,
Liberty finished the spring with a 15-7 mark and a 6-1 Big South record, leading to the program's first conference regular season title.
