
Big Sixth Inning Carries Eagles Past Flames

The Winthrop Eagles broke open a 2-2 game with a nine-run sixth inning, en route to a 11-2 victory over the Liberty Flames, Friday night in a Big South Conference contest at Winthrop Ballpark.
Liberty falls to 19-7 in Big South play and 39-16 overall. Winthrop improves to 12-14 in conference action and 24-28 overall.
For the second-straight game, the Flames staked themselves to an advantage in the opening inning. Catcher Nathan Thompson ripped a two-out, RBI single back through the middle to give Liberty a 1-0 lead. The single plated third baseman Tyler Bream, who had grounded into a fielder's choice and moved to second base on a throwing error by Eagle second baseman Tyler Cook.
After Liberty left runners at second and third in the top of the fourth, Winthrop knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. Catcher Eddie Rohan led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Chas Crane. Designated hitter Matt Thielepape followed with a single to put Eagles on the corners. Next batter, first baseman Patrick Gamblin, lifted a fly ball to left field to bring home Rohan and knot the game at 1-1.
In the fifth, Winthrop took its first lead in the series. Right fielder Sean Sullivan opened the frame by lining a double to the warning track in right center field. After moving to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Cook, Sullivan scored on a wild pitch, giving the Eagles a 2-1 edge.
Liberty's Bream tied the game leading off the sixth. Bream blasted his eighth home run of the year, rising liner over the left field wall, evening the score at 2-2.
Winthrop broke the contest open in the bottom of the inning with nine runs . Thielepape drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a single by Gamblin. After Gamblin advanced to second on wild pitch, shortstop Adam Gliebe singled home Thielepape for a 3-2 edge. Pinch hitter Max Vogel followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Gamblin with the second run of the frame.
After center fielder Tyler McBride walked, Sullivan hit a one-out, run-scoring single to make it, 5-2. Cook and Rohan followed with a fielder's choice RBIs to give the Eagles a 7-2 advantage. Two batters later, Gamblin hit his seventh home run of the season, a grand slam for an 11-2 lead.
Liberty starter Shawn Teufel drops to 10-3 on the season. The left-hander gave up five runs on seven hits over five innings. The first of five Flames to pitch in the contest, Teufel struck out two and walked two batters.
Winthrop starter Robert Lake moves 6-4 on the year. He allowed two runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out five batters and walked one.
Williams had two hits for Liberty. Four Eagles had two hits each.
Liberty and Winthrop conclude their three-game series and the 2010 regular season tomorrow afternoon at the Winthrop Ballpark. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
