The No. 4-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers led from start to finish, defeating the Liberty Flames, 7-1, Saturday night in a Big South Conference contest at Worthington Stadium.
Liberty drops to 18-5 in the Big South and 37-14 overall. Coastal Carolina, who has won eight-straight contests, moves to 22-0 in conference action and 44-6 overall.
For the second-straight night, the Chanticleers pushed a run across to open the contest. Center fielder Rico Noel was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Scott Woodward. After stealing third base, Noel scored the first run of the game on a ground out to second base by catcher Jose Iglesias.
In the third inning, Coastal Carolina added to its lead. Noel walked to lead off the frame and once again, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Woodward. Iglesias followed by dropping a single into right field to bring home Noel, extending the Chanticleer advantage to 2-0.
Coastal Carolina added two more runs in the fourth. Shortstop Taylor Motter began the inning with a single and moved to second when the hit was mishandled by Liberty left fielder Kenneth Negron. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Chance Gilmore, Josh Conway plated Motter by lining a double to the warning track in right field for a 3-0 advantage.
After moving to second when the next batter Noel walked, Conway stole third base on a double steal and scored as Flames catcher Nathan Thompson's throw was wide and sailed into left field.
Liberty pushed across a run in the bottom of the fifth. The first three Flames reached to open the inning. Two batters later, shortstop Matt Williams got Liberty on the scoreboard by punching a one-out single to right field to make it, 4-1. However, Coastal Carolina starter Cody Wheeler prevented further damage by striking out the next two Liberty batters to end the frame.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Chanticleers loaded the bases with one out. Right-hander Cameron Giannini was summoned from the Flames' bullpen and induced two ground ball outs to keep Coastal Carolina from extending its advantage.
The Chanticleers broke the game open in the seventh. First baseman Adam Rice led off the inning with his eighth home run of the year, a shot over the left field wall, for a 5-1 edge. After the next batter was retired, Coastal Carolina loaded the bases. Noel followed by drawing a walk to force in a run and Woodward lifted a RBI sacrifice fly, stretching the Chanticleer cushion to 7-1.
Liberty starter Shawn Teufel takes his first setback since March 26, falling to 10-2 on the season. The left-hander allowed four runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings. The first of four Flames to take the mound in the contest, he struck out six batters and walked three.
Coastal Carolina's Wheeler remains unbeaten on the year, improving to 10-0. The left-hander gave up one run on seven hits. The junior struck out seven hitters and walked one.
Center fielder Curran Redal had two of Liberty's seven hits in the contest. Left fielder Chance Gilmore had three hits for Coastal Carolina, who had 10 hits.
The Chanticleers and the Flames will meet again tomorrow afternoon in the final game of their three-game series. Before the game, the 10 seniors on the Liberty roster will be recognized. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
