With their sixth win in seven outings, the Flames move to 19-9 on the season. Old Dominion drops to 13-19. Every Liberty starter had at least one hit in the non-conference contest, as the Flames had a season-high 21 hits in the game.
The visiting Flames jumped on the scoreboard in the opening inning, sending 10 men to the plate to score seven runs on six hits. After the first three batters of the frame reached safely to load the bases, catcher Nathan Thompson blasted a bases-clearing double off the left-center field wall to begin the uprising with a 3-0 advantage.
Later in the inning, Thompson scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead. Right fielder Michael Robertson, the seventh batter of the frame, followed with a RBI single to plate the fifth run of the inning. Designated hitter Jeff Jefferson capped the opening stanza scoring burst, rocketing an offering over the left-center field fence for his second home run of the year, and a 7-0 lead.
Liberty plated two more runs in the second inning, benefiting from an Old Dominion error. With two out and Doug Bream on third base after leading off the frame with an infield single, a chopper by shortstop Matt Williams was mishandled by Monarch third baseman Jake McAloose, allowing the runner to score and keeping the stanza alive. After an infield single by second baseman P.J. Jimenez moved Williams to second, he scored to make it, 9-0, on a single by Robertson.
After being held off held scoreless for the first time in the third, the Flames plated another run in the fourth. Back-to-back doubles by Thompson and Williams to lead off the inning stretched the Liberty advantage to 10-0.
Having been held in check by Liberty starter Cameron Giannini through the first four frames, Old Dominion got on the scoreboard in the fifth. Right fielder Chris Baker singled to open the inning for the Monarch and later scored the first Old Dominion run on a wild pitch.
In the sixth, Old Dominion scored five runs before recording an out against the Liberty bullpen. Designated hitter Brandon Shelton walked and scored on a RBI double by McAloose. McAloose then moved to third base on a single by catcher Edgar Hernandez and scored, when a throw back to the mound was mshandled by pitcher Chris Roach for the second run of the frame. Two batters later, Baker hit his first home run of the season with two men aboard, making it, 10-6 Liberty.
The Flames added a run in the eighth. With two outs, three straight singles by Liberty batters, the last by center fielder Curran Redal, extended its lead to 11-6.
In the top of the ninth, Liberty plated another run on a double by Tyler Bream and a RBI single by Jimenez. In the bottom of the inning, Old Dominion scored three runs for the final score of 12-9.
Giannini runs his record to 2-1 on the season. The first of four Liberty pitchers in the contest, the right-hander allowed one run on five hits through the first five innings.
Monarch starter Phil McCarthy takes the loss to fall to 0-2. He was roughed up by the Flames and did not make it out of the first inning. The first of four Old Dominion pitchers in the contest, the right-hander gave up six runs on four hits in just 1/3 innings.
Four Flames, Redal, Doug Bream, Tyler Bream and Jimenez, had three hits each in the contest. Chris Buss and McAloose had three hits apiece for the Monarchs.
Liberty travels to Radford this weekend for a three-game Big South Conference series, Friday-Sunday. Friday's series opener gets underway at 3 p.m.
