Liberty falls to 22-10 on the year, and sees its four-game win streak halted. Elon improves to 22-12. It was the first meeting between the two squads since 2003.
The Phoenix plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning for a short-lived advantage. With one out, left fielder Matt Hinson lined his ninth home run of the year into the right field bullpen for the first run of the contest. After a ground out, right fielder Justin Hilt singled with two out and scored on a double into the left field corner by third baseman Ben Scott for a 2-0 Elon lead.
Liberty answered in the home half of the inning. Shortstop Matt Williams walked and stole second to open the frame. After advancing to third on a ground out, Williams came home on a fielder's choice grounder to the pitcher by designated hitter Justin Richardson, when Elon catcher Alex Swim dropped the throw to home plate in an attempt to prevent the Flames' shortstop from scoring.
Two batters later, first baseman Jeff Jefferson lined a two-out single back through the middle of the infield, plating Richardson to knot the score at 2-2. Curran Redal followed with a high pop-up behind the pitcher's mound, which dropped between all four Phoenix infielders, allowing Jefferson to come around for a 3-2 Liberty advantage.
In the fifth inning, Elon went on top for good in the contest. Swim led off the frame with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. After first baseman Ryan Adams walked, shortstop Neal Pitchard singled to load the bases. Hinson then chased home the first run of the inning with a RBI ground out to first. Second baseman Scott Riddle followed with a two-out single to plate two more runs, pushing Elon into the lead at 5-3.
Liberty threatened in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, P.J. Jimenez lined a single to center field and two batters later, moved to second when right fielder Michael Robertson was hit by a pitch. However, Thomas Girwood, the Southern Conference all-time leader in saves, was summoned from the bullpen and retired the next Flames hitter to end the threat.
Liberty starter Cameron Giannini falls to 2-2 on the year. The freshman right-hander allowed five runs on six hits. He struck out three batters and walked three. Tim Dudley followed with four innings of scoreless relief for the Flames, scattering four hits. Dane Beakler finished, pitching a scoreless 2/3 of an inning.
Elon starter Ken Ferrer moves to 6-2 on the season. He gave up three runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out eight batters and walked one. Girwood, the last of four Phoenix pitchers to take the mound in the contest, records his third save of the season. He pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings, striking out one.
Redal led the Flames with two hits in the contest. Swim, Pitchard and Scott each had two hits for the Phoenix.
Liberty continues its six-game homestand, this weekend. The Flames will host the No. 26 VMI Keydets in a three-game Big South series. First pitch for the opening game of the series, Friday, is scheduled for 7 p.m.
