The Liberty Flames defeated the Radford Highlanders, 3-1, in a pitcher's duel, Saturday afternoon in a Big South Conference match-up at the RU Baseball Field.
With its third-straight win, Liberty moves to 5-3 in Big South Conference action and 21-9 overall on the year. Radford drops to 4-4 in conference play and 13-15 overall.
For the second straight afternoon, the Flames jumped out to a lead in the opening inning. After second baseman P.J. Jimenez reached on a fielder's choice, third baseman Tyler Bream ripped a one-out double to the warning track in left field to move both runners into scoring position. Catcher Nathan Thompson followed with a two-run single to left, giving Liberty a 2-0 advantage.
Radford sliced the Flames' lead in half, with a run in the home half of the third inning. Third baseman Matt Mack led off the frame with a single and stole second base. Two batters later, shortstop Brett Mollenhauer singled up the middle to bring home Mack with the lone Highlander run of the contest.
In the sixth, Radford threatened as three-straight walks loaded the bases with one out. However, Josh Richardson was summoned from the Liberty bullpen and proceeded to end the threat. The right-hander struck out the first batter he faced and then induced a foul out to prevent the Highlanders from tying the contest.
After left fielder Doug Bream threw out a runner at home plate trying to score to keep the Flames in front during the bottom of the seventh, Liberty extended its lead in the eighth. Jimenez walked to open the inning and scored on a hit-and-run double by Tyler Bream into the left field corner for the 3-1 final score.
Liberty starter Keegan Linza runs his record to a Big South-leading 7-0. The right-hander gave up the only Radford run of the contest on five hits over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out six batters and walked five. Richardson earned his third save of the season, with 3 2/3 innings of relief. The freshman struck out three batters.
Radford starter Eric Butler drops to 4-2 on the year. The freshman right-hander allowed three runs on six hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked three. Brad Wimmer pitched two scoreless frames of relief for the Highlanders.
Tyler Bream lead the Flames with two hits. Right fielder Cory Turner and designated hitter Matt Hillsinger had two hits apiece for the Highlanders.
Liberty and Radford will wrap-up their three-game series tomorrow at the RU Baseball Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
