
Liberty Rolls Past High Point on Senior Night

Amber Mays, Liberty's lone senior, was recognized prior to tipoff, Monday evening at the Vines Center. However, it was a redshirt freshman, Devon Brown, who stole the show on Senior Night, contributing 23 points and nine rebounds to the Lady Flames' 73-48, season-ending victory over High Point.
Brown was one of four Lady Flames who scored in double figures, helping Liberty win its seventh consecutive game. The Lady Flames close the regular season at 24-5 overall and 14-2 in Big South play.
Meanwhile, the Panthers shot just 34.0 percent (16-of-47) from the floor and were held 20 points below their season scoring average. High Point drops to 16-13 overall and 9-7 in the Big South, after its second straight setback.
The lead changed hands three times during the contest's first five minutes, before Brown asserted herself during a 12-3 Liberty run. The Waynesboro, Va., native scored 10 of the Lady Flames' points during the surge, including a jump shot at 12:05 which put Liberty in front, 16-8.
The Lady Flames' advantage reached double digits for the first time at the 6:47 mark, when Danika Dale made a driving layup to make it 23-12, Liberty.
High Point chipped away at Liberty's lead, cutting it to 27-22 on Laura Whitt's triple, 3:18 before halftime.
The homestanding Lady Flames pushed their cushion back to eight, 33-25, at the intermission. Avery Warley's fast break layup as the buzzer sounded punctuated the opening half for Liberty.
The Lady Flames made 52.0 percent (13-of-25) of their field goals during the opening 20 minutes, while High Point checked in at 37.5 percent (9-of-24).
Liberty continued its season-long trend of controlling the area around the basket, outrebounding the Panthers, 17-13, and tallying 20 first-half points in the paint.
Brown scored nearly half of the Lady Flames' points before the break, ending the stanza with 16 points and seven rebounds. Warley added six points and four rebounds, while Mays distributed a trio of assists.
LaTeisha Dean's six points paced High Point offensively in the first half. Backcourt mate Frances Fields corralled a team-high three rebounds.
Brown continued her production early in the second half, scoring five points during a 7-3 Liberty surge to open the period. Her putback hoop with 16:55 remaining lifted the Lady Flames to a 40-28 lead.
Fields scored four consecutive points, pulling the Panthers to within 40-32 at 15:50. High Point trailed by nine, before being held to one made field goal over an 8:22 span.
Liberty outscored the Panthers 20-5 during that time, featuring seven points by Jelena Antic. Mays capped the extended surge with a pair of made free throws at 5:37. Her charity tosses gave the Lady Flames a 66-42 lead.
High Point got no closer than 19 points the rest of the way, and the Lady Flames completed a season sweep of the Panthers with a 73-48 triumph. It was Liberty's 22nd double-digit victory of the season.
