Fresh off earning the Women's Outstanding Track Performer award at the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships, Liberty redshirt senior Jaime Watson was at it again, Saturday at the ECAC Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. She improved her chances at qualifying for the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships by clocking an impressive 2:05.42 in the 800-meter run at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.
Watson's (Ravenna, Mich.) Liberty and Big South Conference record-setting performance highlighted a successful day for the Lady Flames in the ECAC running event preliminaries. Although Liberty has not scored any team points yet, the Lady Flames sent four athletes through to Sunday's finals. Connecticut tops the ECAC standings with 29.5 points, through the first five events.
Across town at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center, the Liberty men's squad sits in 15th place after day one of the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships, thanks to Kolby Shepherd's (Jr., Dublin, Ga.) performance in the pole vault. Through four events, the Flames have tallied 4.5 team points. Defending champion Albany leads the way with 15.5 points.
Women's Meet Recap
Watson, the 2008 ECAC indoor 800-meter champion, ran the fastest 800 preliminary time by nearly three seconds on Saturday. She also sliced .73 seconds off of her own Liberty and Big South Conference records in the event, set Feb. 12 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
Watson now ranks No. 15 nationally in the women's 800-meter run and will find out Monday evening whether or not she will get the chance to return to Fayetteville for next weekend's NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
On Sunday, Rebekah Ricksecker (R-Sr., Laurel, Del.) and Jennifer Klugh (So., Centerburg, Ohio) led Liberty's impressive 1-2-3 sweep in the women's mile. Six days later, the duo was impressive once again in the mile, as both won their qualifying heats and reached Sunday's ECAC final. Ricksecker's time of 4:52.82 was the second-fastest out of 22 entrants, while Klugh's 4:54.13 set a new personal best by more than two seconds.
Chenoa Freeman (Sr., Lincoln, Del.) qualified for the ECAC indoor 400-meter dash final for the first time in her career, running the ninth-fastest time in Saturday's heats, 56.08.
Sophomore Olivia Charnuski (R-So., Elmira, Ontario) narrowly missed the 60-meter hurdles final. She posted the second-fastest time of her career, 8.67, during Saturday's semifinal race. However, it ended up as the ninth-fastest qualifying time and only eight runners advanced to Sunday's final.
Men's Meet Recap
Shepherd, coming off his third straight Big South indoor men's pole vault title, cleared 16-0.75, sharing fourth place with Manhattan's Brian McGovern. It improved upon his fifth-place finish at the IC4A indoor meet in 2008 as a freshman.
Fellow junior and repeat Big South champion Geren Woodbridge (Allentown, Pa.) got off to a strong start in the heptathlon on Saturday. His personal-best 43-2.25 shot put highlighted a day where he totaled 2,782 points. Woodbridge sits in fifth place with three events, including one of his best disciplines, the pole vault, remaining on Sunday.
Ryan Smith (R-Fr., Winder, Ga.) finished 10th out of 30 IC4A weight throwers and second among freshmen. His top throw of the day measured 56-0.
Liberty wrapped up its day with a pair of relays, including its fastest indoor 4 x 800 time since 1996. The quartet of Paul Arslain (Fr., Dover, Pa.), Drew Edwards (So., Anchorage, Alaska), Jordan Bright (So., Damascus, Ore.) and Isaac Wendland (So., Charles City, Iowa) crossed the line in 7:42.87, ranking No. 3 in program history. The Flames finished 13th in the qualifying heats with the strong effort.

Alyssa Pegues (So., Warner Robins, Ga.) is the first Lady Flame scheduled to compete at the ECAC meet, beginning the triple jump at noon. Meanwhile, Woodbridge will get things underway for Liberty at the IC4A meet, contesting the heptathlon 55-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m.
