Evans Kigen won the 5K title and Clarence Powell captured the high jump crown, Sunday at the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships. Their performances, which highlighted Liberty's six top-four finishes on Sunday, enabled the Flames to tie Cornell for third place in the final team standings.
Five Flames combined to tally 41 points on Sunday, giving Liberty a final score of 45.5. The finish equaled the Flames' second-highest placing ever at the IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships. Liberty captured runner-up honors in 2008 and also shared third place in 1998.
Albany successfully defended its IC4A crown at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center, staving off runner-up George Mason's late charge, 68.5 to 65. A total of 52 teams notched at least one point at the IC4A meet.
Meanwhile, a trio of Lady Flames scored points during Sunday's final-day action at the ECAC Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. As a result, Liberty ended up tying Brown, Fordham, Northeastern, Saint Francis (Pa.) and West Virginia for 32nd place with eight points at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center. Connecticut ran away with the team title with 84.5 points, while fellow BIG EAST squad Seton Hall took second with 65 markers.
Men's Meet Recap
Powell (Jr., Marianna, Fla.) got the Flames' successful day off to a good start at the IC4A meet, despite a less-than-ideal competition schedule. The Big South Conference Men's Outstanding Field Performer was entered in the triple jump at 11:30 a.m. and the high jump at noon. He took the early lead in the triple jump, with his opening leap of 49-3.75, before heading to the high jump apron.
Powell needed just one successful high jump, a close third-attempt clearance at 6-10.25, to earn his first career IC4A title. After three unsuccessful tries at 7-1.5, the Sunshine State native returned to the triple jump to take his final three jumps.
Powell was unable to improve his mark, but his 49-3.75 held up for third place in the triple jump. It matched his placing at the 2008 IC4A Outdoor Track & Field Championships and gave him 16 total points at the IC4A meet, one week after recording 28 points at the Big South Championships.
Meanwhile, Kigen (R-Jr., Eldoret, Kenya) found the Boston University facility to his liking for the second time in his career. During his first semester at Liberty, Kigen had clocked a personal-best 14:05.92, placing second in the 5K at the 2008 IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Two years later, Kigen moved up a step on the awards podium with his winning time of 14:15.90. He held off Syracuse senior Curtis Bixler by .72 seconds to join his graduate assistant coach Josh McDougal as the only Flames ever to capture the IC4A indoor 5K crown. McDougal outlasted a Fairleigh Dickinson freshman named Sam Chelanga (R-Jr., Nairobi, Kenya) to win in 2007.
Josh Edmonds (Sr., Cooperstown, N.Y.) followed closely behind Kigen with a career-best 14:20.86 for fourth place. Edmonds moved up to No. 5 on Liberty's all-time performance list, as he helped the Flames score 15 total points in the 5K.
Geren Woodbridge (R-Jr., Allentown, Pa.) moved up one spot during the final three events of the heptathlon, finishing fourth with a career-best 5,152 points. Aided by a 14-9 pole vault, he now ranks No. 3 in program history, behind only Brandon Hoskins and Daniel Newell.
The only freshman to finish among the top 15 in Sunday's IC4A shot put competition, Ryan Smith (R-Fr., Winder, Ga.) took home fourth place. The Big South champion went over 55 feet for the third time this season, recording a 55-7 on his third put.
Women's Meet Recap
For the second straight weekend, Jennifer Klugh (So., Centerburg, Ohio) finished right behind teammate Rebekah Ricksecker (R-Sr., Laurel, Del.) in the women's mile. After the duo led a 1-2-3 Liberty showing last Sunday at the Big South meet, Ricksecker and Klugh placed fifth and sixth, respectively, at the ECAC Championships. Ricksecker clocked a 4:55.23, while Klugh crossed the line in 4:55.75.
Moments later, Chenoa Freeman (Sr., Lincoln, Del.) took the track and ran the fastest indoor 400 of her career, a 55.56. The effort netted an eighth-place finish in the two-lap event.
Alyssa Pegues (So., Warner Robins, Ga.) was the final Lady Flame to compete on Sunday, taking part in the triple jump. She ended up 23rd with a distance of 37-3.25.
Jaime Watson (R-Sr., Ravenna, Mich.) had recorded the fastest time in the 800-meter preliminaries on Saturday, a stellar 2:05.42. However, head coach Brant Tolsma held her out of Sunday's final, in an effort to save her energy for an anticipated berth at next weekend's NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The indoor track & field season will culminate with the 2010 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Six-time All-American Chelanga will run the men's 5K on Friday, while Watson will hope to make her NCAA meet debut in the women's 800. She will find out whether she has been selected for the field Monday evening.
A sizable contingent of Liberty men's and women's track & field athletes not heading to Arkansas will open the 2010 outdoor campaign in Conway, S.C. Coastal Carolina will host the CCU Invitational, Friday and Saturday.
