The Liberty Flames men's tennis dropped a 7-0 decision to the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers, Saturday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. It was the first-ever meeting between the Flames and a team ranked No. 1 in the country.
Liberty falls to 1-5. Virginia moves to 13-1.
The Cavaliers, winners of 11 consecutive matches, opened the match by taking the doubles point. Virginia's Philippe Oudshoorn and Steven Elkeman Rooda defeated Liberty's Siim Tuus and Tristan Stayt in a tightly played No. 1 contest, 8-5. Despite a strong effort by the Flames combination of Louis Steyn and Ben Wirth, the host Cavaliers' pairing of Santiago Villegas and Dino Dell'Orto were able to win the No. 2 contest, 7-6 (4).
In singles, the Flames stretched Virginia to tiebreakers in two of the matches, but were not able to break through for a win. Giancarlo Lemmi forced a second set tiebreaker in the No. 3 spot against Julen Uriguen. However, the sophomore could not force a third set, falling 6-0, 7-6 (0). Teammate Chad Simpson also had his No. 4 contest go to a second set tiebreaker, before dropping a 6-2, 7-6 (1) decision to Milo Johnson.
Later in the day, the Flames hosted Bluefield at the Sports Racket in Lynchburg.
