Scouting Winthrop
After a slow start to the 2009-10 season, Winthrop has come on in recent weeks, winning four of its last five games. All four of those victories have come at the Winthrop Coliseum, where the Eagles are 8-2 this year. Winthrop's greatest strength has been defense, and the Eagles are ranked among the nation's top 50 teams in both scoring defense (56.1 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.346).
Shanice Cole, a 5-10 senior guard/forward, has done a little bit of everything for the Eagles this season. She leads the team in points (12.2 ppg), rebounds (7.3 rpg) and assists (2.4 apg). Fellow senior Jessica Fansler, a 5-11 guard/forward, chips in 9.0 ppg and has connected on a team-high 34 triples this season.
The Coaching Matchup
Liberty Head Coach Carey Green is in his 11th season with the Lady Flames, and has led his team to nine Big South titles. A five-time Big South Coach of the Year, Green owns a 254-82 career record and is the all-time wins leader at Liberty and among Big South women's basketball coaches. His career winning percentage (.756) ranked ninth all-time among NCAA Division I women's basketball coaches at the season's outset. Green is 24-1 against Winthrop.
Bud Childers is 68-109 in his sixth season as Winthrop's head coach and is 443-348 in 28 total seasons as a collegiate head coach. Childers has also coached at Cumberland College, Montevallo, Murray State, Louisville and James Madison. He was named 1997 Conference USA Coach of the Year and 2000 CAA Coach of the Year. Childers is 2-13 all-time versus Liberty.
Liberty-Winthrop Series Notes
Liberty is 38-7 all-time versus Winthrop, including four straight victories by the Lady Flames. Liberty has won 29 of its last 30 meetings with the Eagles and is 11-1 in its last 12 visits to Winthrop.
The Lady Flames have held Winthrop to 59 points or fewer in 20 straight games. The last time the Eagles scored 60 points against Liberty was Jan. 19, 2002, when the Lady Flames posted a 74-64 victory at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Liberty won its first matchup against Winthrop this season, 67-38, Jan. 9 at the Vines Center. The Lady Flames led by a single point, 1:06 before halftime, but then went on an 18-0 run to break the game open. Devon Brown led all scorers with 21 points, while teammate Amber Mays distributed a career-high 10 assists. Shanice Cole's 10 points paced Winthrop's attack.
Last year, the Lady Flames needed a late comeback to win at Winthrop. Liberty trailed the host Eagles, 47-41, with 4:53 remaining, before pulling out a 55-51 victory. Megan Frazee scored seven of her game-high 20 points during the Lady Flames' game-ending surge, and Avery Warley's putback with 30.0 seconds left gave Liberty the lead for good.
Winthrop's most recent victory over the Lady Flames was a 56-52 decision, Feb. 27, 2008 at the Winthrop Coliseum. The Eagles scored the game's final five points to halt Liberty's 13-game winning streak. Franchesca Davenport led the victors with a dozen points. Megan Frazee totaled 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Lady Flames.
Liberty Versus the Big South Conference
Liberty has enjoyed a considerable amount of success versus Big South Conference opposition, since joining the league for the 1991-92 season. The Lady Flames have won the conference tournament 12 times and captured 11 regular-season championships.
Liberty is 234-69 (.772) all-time against Big South opponents, including 198-63 in regular-season matchups and 36-6 in Big South Championship tilts. During Carey Green's tenure as head coach, the Lady Flames are 161-16 (.910) when facing Big South foes.
Fabulous in February
Liberty has won 93 of its last 99 games played during the month of February, dating back to the 1997 Big South Championship. The only teams to defeat the Lady Flames in February since then are High Point (three times), Gardner-Webb, UNC Asheville and Winthrop.
The Lady Flames own a 174-122 all-time mark during the year's second month, including a 74-6 record under Carey Green. Liberty, which went 6-0 in February a season ago and is 2-1 this February, has seven games scheduled this month.
Streak Busters
Gardner-Webb was able to end a number of streaks by the Lady Flames, Feb. 8 at the Vines Center. Liberty's streaks which went by the wayside during the 59-56 setback include:
-- 7-game home winning streak. Liberty's last home loss was a 60-50 setback versus James Madison on Dec. 1.
-- 10-game winning streak. Liberty's last loss was a 70-65 decision at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 2.
-- 17-game Big South home winning streak. The last visiting conference team to win at the Vines Center was UNC Asheville, by a 54-51 score, Feb. 24, 2007.
-- 105-game streak of holding opponents below 50 percent shooting from the field. Marist was the last team to make half of its field goals versus the Lady Flames, shooting 50.0 percent (24-of-48), Dec. 29, 2006 at the Terrapin Classic in College Park, Md.
It's Been a While
Liberty will look to avoid losing back-to-back Big South Conference games for the first time since Feb. 20 and 22, 1997. The Lady Flames dropped their final two regular-season games to UNC Greensboro and Winthrop, before coming back the following week to capture their first of 12 Big South titles.
14 in a Row
With a 17-5 record and only seven regular-season games remaining, Liberty has clinched its 14th consecutive winning season. The Lady Flames need three more victories to post their 12th 20-win campaign in the last 14 years.
Two Points = Milestone
Redshirt sophomore Avery Warley needs only two points to reach a career milestone during Monday's game. Warley enters the contest with 498 points and could become the 50th player in program history to score 500 career points.
Warley is also closing in on the 500-rebound milestone, as she has collected 441 boards during the first 55 games of her career. Only 20 Lady Flames have ever tallied 500 career rebounds.
Making the Most of Mondays
Liberty's loss to Gardner-Webb last Monday was the Lady Flames' first setback in a Monday contest this year. The Lady Flames are 4-1 on Monday in 2009-10, outscoring opponents by an average margin of 65.6 to 44.4.
Road Winning Streak
The Lady Flames enter Monday's game at Winthrop on a season-long four-game road winning streak. Liberty has reversed its fortunes away from the Vines Center, after winning just two of its first five road contests this season.
Last year, Liberty posted an eight-game road winning streak, spanning Dec. 30, 2008 and March 6, 2009.
Big Wins, Tight Losses
The Lady Flames' 17 victories this season have come by an average of 24.8 points. Liberty's tightest win was a 57-51 home victory over North Carolina A&T on Jan. 5.
Meanwhile, Liberty has lost its five games by a total of 33 points. James Madison posted the widest margin of victory over the Lady Flames, defeating Liberty 60-50, Dec. 1 at the Vines Center.
Double-Double x 2
Before Jan. 12, the Lady Flames had not seen a pair of players record double-doubles in the same game since Nov. 24, 2007. However, Liberty has accomplished the feat four times in its last nine games.
Longwood (Jan. 12): Jelena Antic (19 pts., 10 rebs.) & Devon Brown (16 pts., 13 rebs.)
Coastal Carolina (Jan. 25): D. Brown (17 pts., 10 rebs.) & A. Warley (15 pts., 12 rebs.)
High Point (Jan. 30): Devon Brown (29 pts., 11 rebs.) & Avery Warley (26 pts., 14 rebs.)
Gardner-Webb (Feb. 8): D. Brown (13 pts., 13 rebs.) & A. Warley (15 pts., 10 rebs.)
Amber Accumulates Assists
Senior Amber Mays tallied a career-high 10 assists during a Jan. 9, 67-38 victory over Winthrop, the most by a Lady Flame since Nov. 22, 2002. That evening, Daina Staugaitiene dished out 10 helpers in a 90-35 season-opening win over Morgan State.
Mays is currently averaging a Big South-leading 4.6 assists per contest on the year. No Liberty point guard has averaged that many assists for an entire season since 1997-98, when Sarah Wilkerson distributed 5.1 apg.
Painting a Masterpiece
Last season, Liberty regularly controlled the area around the basket, outscoring 29 of 33 opponents in the "points in the paint" statistical category.
This year, the Lady Flames are off to an outstanding start in racking up "points in the paint" once again. Liberty has outscored all 22 opponents inside the paint in 2009-10, by an average margin of 23.7 points (39.5 to 15.8).
11 x 10 for No. 40
Redshirt freshman Devon Brown scored 13 points during the Feb. 8 game versus Gardner-Webb, putting her in double figures for the 11th straight game. Gardner-Webb was the last opponent to hold the Big South's leading scorer under 10 points, limiting Brown to nine tallies on Jan. 2.
2009 graduate Megan Frazee set the school record by scoring in double figures 68 straight times (Jan. 27, 2007 through March 15, 2009).
Lack of Overtime
Liberty has played only one overtime game in its last 201 outings, a 64-62 setback at High Point on Jan. 20, 2007. Since that contest at the Millis Center, the Lady Flames have played 100 consecutive games without needing extra time. No players on Liberty's current roster have competed in an overtime game with the Lady Flames.
The Lady Flames' most recent overtime victory came on Jan. 6, 2004, when Liberty defeated American, 76-72, on the road in double overtime.
Liberty's most recent overtime contest at the Vines Center was a memorable one. The Lady Flames defeated Virginia, 77-69, in overtime on Nov. 26, 2002, to claim their first-ever win over the Cavaliers. It also marked Liberty's first win over a ranked opponent, as Virginia entered the game with a No. 25 national ranking.
