Liberty re-opened Williams Stadium in grand fashion on Saturday night, thrilling fans both on and off the field of play. The action on the field, which resulted in a 52-14 victory, helped Liberty move to No. 24 in the latest Sports Network/Fathead.com poll.
The 38-point victory over Savannah State, which was played in front of a record-setting 19,314 fans, helped the Flames move up one spot in the weekly Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Top-25 College Football poll.
Last week, the Flames received 332 votes and were ranked No. 25 in the weekly Sports Network listing, while the squad garnered 486 votes this week.
Liberty currently finds itself sandwiched between No. 23 Southern Illinois (565 votes) and No. 25 Southeast Missouri State (479 votes).
Both programs are coming off victories this past weekend. Southern Illinois picked up a 38-17 victory over Illinois State to move to 2-3 on the year, while Southeast Missouri State downed Eastern Illinois, 28-13, to move to 4-1 on the season.
For the second week in a row, Liberty finds itself just outside the FCS Coaches Top 25 weekly poll. The Flames received 61 votes and were just five votes shy of No. 25 Wofford, who moved to 3-1 on the year after 38-17 victory over Furman.
Wofford was one of three programs who were outside the FCS Coaches Top 25 listing last week who find themselves included in the list this week.
Western Illinois made the largest leap among the previously unranked three, moving up to No. 20 after upending previously No. 13 North Dakota State, 28-16. Northern Arizona took the No. 24 spot after a 26-23 win over Southern Utah moved the squad to 3-1 on the year.
For the first time this year, Appalachian State is the unanimous No. 1 program in the country in both the Sports Network/Fathead.com and FCS Coaches polls.
The Mountaineers have been ranked atop the FCS Coaches poll for the last two weeks, but were ranked No. 2 in the Sports Network/Fathead.com listing the previous three weeks.
Dating back to the second week of the 2008 season, Liberty has been ranked inside the Top 25 for 27 out of the last 35 weekly polls (including preseason and end of the year rankings).
Liberty will begin its quest for a fourth-straight Big South title on Saturday, when the Flames welcome Charleston Southern to the newly renovated Williams Stadium. Kickoff for the University's annual Homecoming Weekend football game is set for 3:30 p.m.
