As Liberty closes out its week between football contests, LibertyFlames.com correspondents Alan York and Nick Pierce had a chance to sit down with head coach Danny Rocco and each of the program's coordinators during this bye week.
Today, York had a chance to catch up with passing game and offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter, who is currently in his second year in charge of Liberty's offensive efforts.
Last year, Liberty was hitting on all cylinders during Streeter's inaugural season as offensive coordinator, as the Flames ranked No. 1 in the country in scoring offense by averaging 36.36 points per game. Scoring figures are up around the country and this year, the Flames rank No. 12 nationally by averaging 34.57 points per game.
The Flames have had predominately a run-based program for nearly a decade, rushing for more than 2,000 yards in six out of the last eight seasons.
However, the Flames have taken to the air in 2010. Liberty ranks No. 6 nationally in passing offense (295.00 yards per game) and No. 7 in passing efficiency (158.91). Liberty is tied for No. 3 nationally in total passing touchdowns with 20, ranking behind Jacksonville (22) and Montana (21).
Mike Brown and Chris Summers have accounted for most of Liberty's notable individual offensive performances so far in 2010. Brown, a Walter Payton Award candidate, has already set a new program and Big South standard by passing for 200 or more yards in seven-straight games. The junior currently ranks No. 3 nationally in total offense (321.86 yards per game), is tied for No. 3 with 17 passing touchdowns, is No. 5 in points responsible for (18.00 per game) and is No. 6 in total passing yards (1,856).
Summers has been Brown's top-ranked target through seven games and the 6-4 wide receiver has already rewritten a school record. Against VMI, Summers posted his second three-touchdown game of the year and now has 12 receiving touchdowns, which leads the nation. The three-score effort against the Keydets helped him surpass Eric Green's 1989 record of 10 receiving touchdowns, the previous school record for touchdown receptions in a season.
