
Double-Doubles Highlight Lady Flames Victory

Freshmen Jelena Antic and Devon Brown both notched double-doubles, leading Liberty past Longwood, 78-55, in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening at the Vines Center.
Liberty improves to 10-4 on the season, after posting its third straight win. The Lady Flames enjoyed a sizable 54-19 rebounding advantage and scored 54 points in the paint, on their way to their 40th consecutive January home victory.
Longwood is now 4-14, after suffering its sixth setback in a row. The Lancers have now lost their last five meetings with local rival Liberty.
After being named Big South Freshman of the Week earlier in the day, Antic got the Lady Flames off to a fast start. She scored six points in the first 1:52 of the contest, staking Liberty to an early 6-0 advantage.
Longwood broke the ice on its ensuing possession, when Chelsea Coward canned a jumper, cutting the Liberty advantage to four points.
Back-to-back Avery Warley layups then initiated an 8-0 burst by the Lady Flames. Liberty's lead reached 14-2 when Brown netted a layup at the 14:31 mark.
Another Liberty run, a 12-2 surge, pushed the home team's lead up to 20 points for the first time. Amber Mays' steal and layup 7:55 before halftime made the score 28-8, Lady Flames.
The Lancers utilized the three-point shot to climb back into the contest. A pair of triples highlighted a 12-3 surge by the visitors from Farmville, Va. Morgan Smith's trey from the left corner at 4:19 trimmed her team's deficit to 31-20.
Liberty then scored seven consecutive points, with three of them coming by Antic, making the score 38-20, 1:17 before the break.
The Lancers pulled to within 13 points (38-25) at intermission, after closing the opening stanza with a 5-0 burst.
Aided by 28 points in the paint, Liberty shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the field during the first 20 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Longwood connected on just 35.7 percent (10-of-28) of its field goal attempts.
The Lady Flames owned a significant 27-8 advantage in rebounds during the first half, as Antic matched the Lancers' team rebounding total singlehandedly.
Longwood stayed within striking distance by converting 13 Liberty turnovers into 14 points in the opening stanza.
Antic complemented her eight boards with a half-leading 11 points. Brown added six points, a matching number of rebounds and a team-high three assists.
Becky Fernandes, the lone senior on Longwood's roster, paced the Lacers with nine first-half points, three assists and a pair of steals.
Longwood opened the second-half scoring with a Krystal Garrison triple from deep in the right corner, extending its overall run to 8-0 and cutting its deficit to 38-28.
Liberty doubled its lead with an ensuing 12-2 surge. Brown notched six points during the run, but it was Warley who bolstered the Lady Flames' advantage to 50-30 with 13:25 remaining with a layup.
As was the case in the opening half, Longwood's long-range shooting quickly got the visitors back into the game. Smith drained the Lancers' third triple of a 13-4 surge at the 10:33 mark, slicing Liberty's edge to 11, at 54-43.
The Lady Flames then kept Longwood scoreless for the next 2:35, forcing a pair of turnovers and three missed shots. Layups by Rachel McLeod and Danika Dale helped Liberty reclaim momentum, and the Lancers got no closer than 13 points down the rest of the way.
Liberty went on to wrap up its fourth consecutive home victory, 78-55, after scoring 37 of its 40 second-half points either inside the paint or at the charity stripe.
The Lady Flames were one missed shot away from hitting 50 percent of their field goals for the second game in a row, ending up at 49.2 percent (30-of-61). Meanwhile, the Lancers became Liberty's 98th straight opponent to shoot below 50 percent. Longwood finished the contest with a 34.6 (18-of-52) field goal percentage.
Liberty came up with 26 offensive rebounds, leading to 19 second-chance points. The Lady Flames also increased their defensive pressure during the second half, coming up with nine of their 12 steals and tallying 17 points off Longwood turnovers.
Antic led all scorers with a career-high 19 points and completed her second career double-double with 10 boards. Fellow freshman Brown contributed 16 points, a career-high equaling 13 boards, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocked shots.
