Appreciation Note from Head Coach Danny Rocco

Following the tremendous show of support from the Liberty University student body during Saturday night's matchup with James Madison, Liberty head football coach Danny Rocco wrote the following letter to the student body:
On behalf of your 2009 Liberty Flames Football team, I want to thank the entire student body for your unbelievable support, Saturday night. I have been coaching college football for over 25 years and I have never seen a student body rally behind its football team the way you did this past weekend.
As I looked out my office window three hours before kickoff, I was amazed at what I saw. Your energy and enthusiasm was outstanding and greatly appreciated.
I am convinced that the school spirit demonstrated Saturday night defines what is so special about our University. It is with great pride and humility that I represent Liberty University as your head football coach.

Despite steady rains in the Lynchburg area throughout the afternoon and evening, 15,532 fans packed Williams Stadium for the showdown between a pair of Top 25 ranked in-state opponents.
The driving force behind the third-largest crowd in program history was Liberty's student body. For the first time in Liberty Athletics history, the Athletics Department opened the gates early to just the student body at 4:30 p.m.
With rain continually falling down, which eventually led to more than an inch of precipitation during the evening, Liberty's students lined the length of University Blvd., ready to pack the East side of Williams Stadium. By time the remaining gates to the stadium were opened, a raucous and enthusiastic student body had already filled its side of the stadium.
For the next two hours leading up to kickoff, the student body filled Williams Stadium with sound, as if the Flames were driving toward the end zone for a score. Armed with "thunder sticks" distributed prior to the gates opening, Liberty's student body created a story which will be told for years to come.
