For the second time this year, Mike Brown has been named the Big South's Offensive Player of the Week. However, the sophomore earned the honor from a different position this time around, helping No. 24 Liberty to a 19-13 road victory over Lafayette.
Brown (R-So., WR/QB, Charlottesville, Va.) got his first career start at quarterback against the Leopards and finished the game completing 29-of-36 passing attempts for 242 yards and his second career touchdown pass.
The sophomore completed his first 10 attempts on the evening and his 80.6 completion percentage ranks as the sixth best, single game performance in Big South history.
His 29 completed passes also ranks among the league's best, as the figure is tied for the 10th most completion in conference single game history. The total also ranks tied for sixth among all-time Flames quarterbacks in a single game.
When not airing the ball out in Easton, Pa., the versatile athlete carried the ball 20 times for 88 yards, while adding his team-leading third rushing touchdown of the year. Combining his passing and rushing yards, Brown finished the game with a career-best 330 total offensive yards.
Following the first week of the season, Brown was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, when the sophomore caught 11 receptions for 157 yards against West Virginia. He also scored twice during the Mountaineer matchup, once on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Beecher and the second on a one-yard run late in the fourth quarter.
The Big South has now honored a member of the Flames' roster all three weeks in 2009. Beside Brown's two award-winning performances, Aldreakis Allen was named the Big South's Freshman of the Week on Sept. 14, after the rookie rushed 50 yards on 13 carries and for a touchdown against North Carolina Central.
Along with Brown, the Big South also honored Stony Brook defensive back Arin West as this week's Defensive Player of the Week, Stony Brook kick returner Matt Brevi as the Special Teams Player of the Week and Gardner-Webb defensive tackle Matthew Goods as Freshman of the Week.
Brown and the Flames will return to action on Saturday, when they welcome in-state opponent James Madison to Williams Stadium. The Commonwealth clash matches up a pair of Top 25 ranked teams, as No. 24/25 Liberty will be facing No. 6/7 James Madison for the first time since the 2003 season and the 15th time overall in the series.
