Earlier today, Liberty's Mike Brown was recognized by the Big South Conference as the league's Offensive Player of the Week. Later this afternoon, national honors started to roll in for the sophomore following a stellar outing at Lafayette, last Saturday.
Brown (R-So., QB/WR, Charlottesville, Va.), in his first game as the Flames' starting quarterback, completed 29-of-36 passing attempts for 242 yards, while throwing a touchdown pass. The sophomore also called his own number 20 times, tallying 88 yards on the ground and his third rushing touchdown of the season.
Brown's completion percentage, 80.6 on the evening, ranks as the sixth best, single game completion percentage in Big South Conference history. His 29 completed passes is tied for sixth best in program history and shares the No. 10 spot on the Big South's single game listing.
For his efforts, Brown was named one of four College Sporting News National All-Stars of the week, as named by the College Sporting News. Brown shared the honors with Eastern Washington's J.C. Sherritt (LB), Chattanooga's Ryan Consiglio (LB) and Florida A&M's LeRoy Vann (RS).
Brown also received national accolades from the Sports Network, who just this week listed the Flames No. 25 in its latest national rankings. The sophomore was named the web site's national Offensive Player of the Week.
Joining Brown on the Sports Network's all-star list, are Richmond defensive tackle Nicholas Battle, who was named national Defensive Player of the Week, and Florida A&M's Vann, who was tabbed the national Special Teams Player of the Week.
Brown is the first Flame to receive national honors since Rashad Jennings. The current Jacksonville Jaguars running back was named the Sports Network's national Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29, 2008, after he rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Flames to a 31-28 road victory over No. 23 Youngstown State.
Brown and the Flames will return to the turf at Williams Stadium on Saturday, when they welcome in-state foe James Madison in a showdown between a pair of Top 25 ranked programs. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., an event which will officially conclude the Athletics Department's inaugural Hall of Fame Weekend.
