Flames Remain Among Nation's Top FCS Programs

Preseason Sports Network Poll
Following the most successful season in football program history, the Liberty Flames still are being considered one of the Top 30 programs in the country, as several organizations have recently released their preseason NCAA FCS polls.
Liberty, after finishing last year with a 10-2 record, ended the year ranked No. 14 in the final Sports Network poll and No. 15 in the last FCS Coaches poll. The No. 14 ranking in the Sports Network listing marked the highest end-of-the-season ranking in program history.
During their first 10-win season in program history, Liberty spent a record-setting 10-straight weeks in the national polls in 2008.
Despite the loss of 25 letterwinners and 15 starters, the Flames are still listing among the Top 30 programs in the nation.
In the recently released FCS Coaches poll, Liberty received 76 votes, leaving the Flames the first team outside the Top 25 and at the head of the list of "others receiving votes." Grambling State, who finished 2008 with an 11-2 mark, was listed at No. 25 with 77 votes.
In the Sports Network poll, the Flames finished two spots outside the Top 25, as Liberty received 330 votes. Grambling State and Holy Cross, who finished 2008 at 7-4, both garnered 382 points to grab the No. 25 post on the poll.
Appalachian State, a three-time NCAA FCS national champion from 2005-07, was the top ranked program in both polls, followed by No. 2 Richmond, No. 3 Montana, No. 4 Northern Iowa and No. 5 Villanova.
James Madison, who was ranked No. 6 in both listings, is Liberty's lone 2009 opponent to be among the Top 25 in either national ranking.
