Rocco Gives Review of Camp after Midpoint

Head coach Danny Rocco held his most scrimmage-oriented practice today, as the Flames ran 90-plus scripted plays during their early morning Saturday workout.
The practice, which began around 9:20 a.m., on the turf at Williams Stadium, served as the players' last workout before their first day off during training camp. Liberty will not return to the practice field until Monday afternoon at 2:20 p.m.
Liberty is now more than halfway through its 2009 training camp, as Saturday's workout served as practice No. 12 of 19 before camp closes next Saturday.
Following the two-hour workout, Rocco had the following comments regarding the scrimmage and the progress of his program throughout training camp:
On today's scrimmage:
"We ran 96 plays out here today and all ones vs. ones and twos vs. twos. We had a good number of reps for all of our starters and I thought it went very well."
"We covered a lot of different situations during the workout. We did not do any goal line plays today, because we spent a considerable amount of time on goal line plays yesterday. However, we were able to introduce our two-minute drills today."
"I thought the team worked very hard and that we got better today as a football team. The one thing we did do today and has been a point of emphasis all throughout this camp was more live work in the kicking game. We did go live today on punt and punt return and we went live on kickoff and kickoff return. "
"When you are dealing with hot days, like we've had during training camp, it requires the players to come out with a lot of effort and energy to perform at a high level. I thought our kids really came with a good work attitude today and we certainly got better."
On how his offensive and defensive units have progressed during camp:
"I think defensively, we are very physical and that our front seven is going to be able to play the run very well. I think we can hold up well against the run and hopefully be able to do that in a seven-man box without having to overload or outnumber the offense. I'm very pleased with the progression of the defensive line and the linebackers. "
"Offensively, the running backs are coming along as scheduled. Coming into camp, I was not sure who they would be, but that position is starting to take shape out here. With B.J. Hayes, Aldreakis Allen, Danny Broggin and SirChauncey Holloway, I think we are going to have a nice committee of guys to go out there and carry the ball for us."
"The two quarterbacks are playing very well. Mike Brown and Tommy Beecher are both having very good camps. We've got a couple of wide receivers injured and I've got to get some guys back before I can really assess that position."
"The offensive line looks solid, but we've also got a couple of injures there that are really keeping us from moving forward."
On some of the individual players who have started to step forward this camp:
"I'm very impressed with the play and performance of our team captains, as they are truly stepping up this camp. Defensively, Wes Cheek is really having a good camp, along with Chris Rocco."
"Offensively, (Bryan) Mosier and (Josh) Weaver on the line are looking very strong, along with Mike Brown being very solid for us. B.J. Hayes is also performing very well and is impressing our coaching staff."
"These are the guys we were expecting to perform well, but we've got some younger players that are also starting to have some impact on training camp."
"We've been very impressed with some of these high school kids that are here for their first training camp. They have been a pleasant surprise, as you never know what you are going to get."
"I think the two in particular that are impressive so far have been Aldreakis Allen and SirChauncey Holloway. Defensively, Demetrius Ward is going to have a role on this football team as a true freshman, as will Cory Freeman."
"I think there is a good blend of senior leadership and some younger talent that is eager to find their spot on our football team."
Although the players will be taking a day off tomorrow to rest and recuperate following several grueling days of training camp, LibertyFlames.com will not be resting, as the web site will return with another position preview. Tomorrow, the web site will be running its preview of the Flames' running backs, a position which is looking for a new leader after the graduation of NFL draftee Rashad Jennings last year.
