19th Annual LU Golf Tournament a Success
7/3/2009 12:00:00 AM | General
The 19th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament was successfully contested at London Downs Golf Club in Forest, Va., on June 12. A record group of 172 golfers battled for prizes in both morning and afternoon flights. There were 28 teams that played in the afternoon and 15 in the morning.
The winning team featured four newcomers to the tournament in Gerald Basham, Phil Ore, Stanley Ore and Mickey Moore. This team won the tournament by shooting 19 under par on the day. The second place team came in close behind at 17 under. That team, sponsored by Universal T's, consisted of Brian Betham, Ed Barnhouse, Jeremiah Colling and Liberty men's soccer coach, Jeff Alder. Finishing third at 16 under, was a team from Quality Pattern Works: Bob Goodman, Ralph Linstra, Jim Freerksen and Marty Sweat.
Skill prizes were awarded for longest putt, four longest drives and four closest to the pin on each par three. Hole-in-one prizes were offered on every par three as well. Tournament Pros sponsored all of the holes-in-one by offering a cruise to Mexico or the Bahamas. Also, the Mabry Automotive Group would have given the winner on number three a choice of a $25,000 car from any of its dealers, if they successfully hit a hole-in-one. No player recorded a hole-in-one.
Four flights were awarded prizes on the day with a total of 11 team winners crowned. In addition, more than 65 golfers who purchased the mulligan package received door prizes supplied by Lynchburg area businesses, for such things as dinners at quality dining establishments, golf equipment, hotel packages and Liberty apparel. Every participant received a substantial gift bag which included a Liberty golf shirt, Liberty Flames golf towel, tournament golf balls and other gifts, certificates and coupons supplied by sponsors.
Sponsorship support for this event continues to grow each year. Major sponsors included Chick-fil-A Wards Road (title), Panera Bread (presenting/practice tee), The College Techs (ball), LU Bookstore (shirt), Universal T's (tee bags), LU Dining/Sodexho (drinks), Tournament Pros (50 ft putt for $2,000, as well as hole-in-one sponsorships) and the Mabry Automotive Group (hole-in-one on #3).
Proceeds from the Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament are used to finance special projects within the athletics department. Proceeds from the 2006 and 2007 tournaments were used to install two points-fouls boards at the Vines Center. Proceeds from the 2008 tournament went toward the conversion of the scoreboard system in the arena to fully wireless. A special administrative athletics internship will also be funded each year from tournament proceeds.
The date for the 20th Annual Chick-fil-A Liberty University Athletics Golf Tournament has been tentatively set for June 11, 2010.
