ESPNU, the 24-hour college sports network, is set to televise the first game of a pivotal Big South baseball series between Liberty and Coastal Carolina, tonight, live from Charles L. Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field at 6 p.m. ESPNU is televising a regular-season Big South baseball game for the fourth consecutive year, as the network aired two baseball games in 2006 and one contest each in 2007 and 2008. It also will be the fifth straight year that Big South baseball will be televised.
Friday's series opener between the Flames and the Chanticleers is a rematch of last year's Big South Tournament title game. The two teams have met in the league final each of the past two years. Friday's game features the conference's top two fielding teams and pitching staffs, in terms of earned run average.
Liberty currently holds first place in the Big South standings at 16-4 (29-14 overall) and has not lost a Big South series this season. The Flames' 16 conference victories are the most by a Liberty team since joining the Big South in 1992.
The Flames are led by center fielder Curran Redal (Jr., Moses Lake, Wash.), who earlier this season set the Big South's hitting streak record of 32 games. Redal is fifth in the conference with a .405 batting average, while Liberty is fifth in hitting as a team, with a .320 average. Left-hander Steven Evans (So., Amherst, Va.) has posted a 6-2 mark for the Flames, with a 3.90 ERA. Fellow left-hander Shawn Teufel (Jr., Tequesta, Fla.) is 7-1 on the hill and has won his last six straight decisions. Reliever Andrew Wilson (Sr., RHP, Cary, N.C.) is second in the Big South with a 3.14 earned run average.
Coastal Carolina, 12-5 in the Big South (33-13 overall), is ranked as high as No. 22 nationally this week and leads the Big South in both hitting (.332) and pitching (4.25 ERA). Senior first baseman David Anderson leads the conference with 16 home runs and 59 runs batted in, and paces the Chanticleers with a .379 batting average. Anderson is second all-time in Big South history with 45 career home runs. On the mound, Cody Wheeler is the Chants' top hurler at 8-0 with a conference-best 3.06 ERA. He also has 66 strikeouts compared to 17 walks on the season.
The contest is the opener of a three-game series between the two squads. The Flames and the Chanticleers will meet again tomorrow night at 6 p.m., followed by the series finale at 2 p.m. Sunday.
