Senior pitcher Sarah Ellis has been recognized as the Big South Conference New Balance Pitcher of the Week. This is the first time in her career Ellis has nabbed the honor.
Ellis recorded a 3-3 record in six starts and seven appearances for the Lady Flames last week, including complete-game shutouts over Stetson and Rutgers.
At the Florida Atlantic Parents' Weekend Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla., Ellis pitched a total of 36.0 innings, giving up only three earned runs in four starts. This included 19.0 innings in one day, as the right-hander completed two games for the Lady Flames, the second of which was a 12-inning loss to host Florida Atlantic.
That loss turned out to be the longest game in Liberty program history, and Ellis surpassed the program record for innings pitched, as her complete-game effort passed the previous mark of 10.2 innings tossed by Ali Thompson against Virginia Tech on April 23, 2001.
Ellis also started against No. 18 Texas A&M in the same tournament, striking out four batters, as the Aggies squeaked by Liberty, 1-0.
Ellis picked up a win against Purdue, striking out three hitters in 6.1 innings, as the Lady Flames ended their trip to Florida with a 4-2 win.
For the week, Ellis notched 35 strikeouts in 46.1 innings of work, posting a 1.36 ERA in the seven-game span.
