LU Sweeps Eagles for Second-Straight 7-0 Win

For the second-straight match and the fourth time this spring season, the Liberty Flames rolled to a 7-0 victory, this time picking off North Carolina Central on Tuesday, during the men's tennis squad's Spring Break run in the Hilton Head area.
The victory leaves the Flames one shy of their first double-digit win total since 2005, as Liberty has won two straight and five of its last matches six to raise its mark to 9-4 in 2009. The loss for the Eagles snapped a brief two-game winning streak and dropped North Carolina Central's record to 5-6.
The Flames received much more of a test at doubles against the Eagles than in their matchup with Manhattanville the previous day. Clay Cypert and Giancarlo Lemmi got the Flames started with an 8-5 win over Aljehandro Espitin and Jack Waissen at No. 1 doubles, giving the tandem their 10th doubles win of the year.
Chad Simpson and Gregorio Machado continued to find success at No. 2 doubles, evening their record on the year at 5-5 with an 8-6 win over Andres Perez and Trey Chatman, while Louis Steyn and Juan Reyes rolled to their eighth victory in 2009 with an 8-2 win over Jose Fabara and Stephen Allsop at No. 3 doubles, sweeping the first team point in the match.
The Flames' top singles and doubles player, Cypert continued to get tested at No. 1 singles. The junior needed a tiebreaker to win in the first, 7-6 (6-0), followed by a 7-5 victory in the second set before Cypert dispatched Waissen.
The Flames only other challenging singles match came at No. 5 singles, but Machado moved to 6-5 on the year with a 6-4, 7-6 (3-0) win over Espitin.
Steyn, who dominated his opponent in the second set with a 6-0 win the previous day, continued to roll, as the Bloemfontein, South Africa native kept Fabara from taking a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles.
Reyes, who only dropped one singles game against Manhattanville yesterday, was flawless against the Eagles today, following Steyn's lead for a 6-0, 6-0 win over Allsop at No. 6 singles.
Rounding out the overall sweep for Liberty were victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles by Simpson and Lemmi, respectively.
Simpson upped his mark to 6-2 at No. 3 singles in 2009 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Perez, while Lemmi closed out the day's action with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Chatman in the No. 4 singles matchup.
The Flames will team up with their female counterparts on Thursday, when they close out Spring Break action in the "Palmetto State" with a contest against Rockhurst. Match time against the Hawks is set for 6:30 p.m.
