Lady Flames Blank Peacocks in Hilton Head

The Lady Flames snapped a brief two-match slide with a dominating 9-0 victory over Upper Iowa, Tuesday afternoon, on Liberty's Spring Break swing in the Hilton Head area.

The convincing victory saw Liberty win almost 90 percent of the event's total games, as the Lady Flames surrendered only three doubles games and nine singles games. The contest, which was scored on a nine-point system instead of a traditional seven-point scale, moves Liberty's record up to 5-6 and Upper Iowa's mark down to 1-3.

Lady Flames head coach Chris Johnson, still looking for the correct doubles rotation, sent out three relatively new tandems. The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles pairs were playing together for just the second time this spring, while the No. 3 group was on the tennis courts for its third match in 2009.

But unfamiliarity certainly didn't show in the results, as all three doubles pairs rolled to 8-1 wins. Jordan Jenkins and Hannah Fick moved to 2-0 on the year with an 8-1 win over Kasey Huisman and Mallery Cox at No. 1 doubles, followed by Stephanie Brown and Nadia Solomon-Burgess' 8-1 win over Betsy Kimburg and Courtney Romer at No. 2 doubles.

The playing pair of Fabiana Gouveia and Lais Souza picked up their first win in three tries a doubles partners, knocking off Nicole Henry and Kelsey Montgomery, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles to give the Lady Flames the early 3-0 edge in the team match.

The Lady Flames' supremacy over the Peacocks continued when the match moved to singles contests. Brown started the six straight-set wins at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Huisman to move to 2-1 on the year in the top spot of the lineup.

Solomon-Burgess and Souza rolled at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, holding Montgomery and Cox scoreless, respectively, with consecutive 6-0, 6-0 wins to widen Liberty's advantage.

Fick extended her team-leading individual winning streak to five matches, picking off Romer, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, followed by Gouveia's 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kimburg at No. 5 singles.

Katy Laderer completed the 9-0 sweep for the Lady Flames, as the freshman notched her first career singles win with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Henry at No. 6 singles to close out the rout.

The Lady Flames will have Wednesday off, before closing out their Spring Break run in the Hilton Head area, when they face Rockhurst along with the men's squad. The match against the Hawks is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
