Following their final home game of the year where the Flames posted a 54-14 win over VMI, Liberty maintained its ranking in the Sports Network poll and moved up one spot in the FCS Coaches listing, which were both released earlier today.
After five-straight wins, Liberty enters the home stretch of its 2009 campaign with a 7-2 record and an unblemished 4-0 record in league play.
In search of their third-straight Big South Conference title, the Flames hold the third-longest active FCS conference winning streak in the country at 15-straight games, which dates back to the 2006 season.
For the second-straight week, the Flames are holding down the No. 16 ranking in the Sports Network poll, after receiving 1,246 votes.
Losses by previously undefeated Richmond, as well as a second loss on the year by South Dakota State, provided the only significant movement in the polls above the Flames.
Liberty was able to climb one rung up the ladder in the FCS Coaches listing, thanks to previous No. 16 Eastern Washington dropping a 47-10 decision at Portland State.
The Flames garnered 258 votes in the FCS Coaches poll and sit just behind No. 15 Jacksonville State (No. 15/293 votes) and ahead of Stephen F Austin (No. 17/249 votes).
Liberty has now been ranked inside the Top 25 the past four-straight weeks and in seven out of 11 listings throughout the 2009 season.
The Flames, who are 10-1 under head coach Danny Rocco in the month of November, will continue to push toward a third-straight Big South title, when they take to the road for their final two games of the year.
No. 16 Liberty will begin the two-game road closing stretch by traveling to Boiling Springs, N.C., this weekend to face Gardner-Webb. Kickoff at Spangler Stadium is slated for 1:30 p.m.
The following weekend, Liberty will close out its regular season with its first-ever trip to Stony Brook, N.Y., to face Big South foe Stony Brook.
The Seawolves and the Flames remain the only unbeaten teams left in the Big South Conference. Stony Brook is on the road as well this weekend, as they make their first-ever trek to Charleston, S.C., to face the Buccaneers at CSU Stadium.
