Liberty held its second straight opponent to below 30 percent field goal shooting and put three players in double figures, Tuesday evening versus UNC Greensboro. As a result, the Lady Flames opened the 2009-10 campaign with their second straight victory, a 60-42 triumph at the Vines Center.
Redshirt freshman Devon Brown scored 26 points for the second consecutive game to open her college career, helping Liberty improve to 2-0.
Meanwhile, UNC Greensboro, which racked up 85 points in its season opener on Saturday, finished with less than half as many tallies versus the Lady Flames. The Spartans' record evens at 1-1, after the visitors shot only 28.8 percent from the field.
Neither team found the bottom of the net for the first 2:38 of the game, before UNC Greensboro's Amanda Leigh drained a 15-foot jumper to break the ice.
However, the blue-clad Spartans only made one field goal over the next 10:37. During their stretch of cold shooting, Liberty opened up a 16-4 lead, aided by six Brown points.
UNCG scored six of the next nine points, trimming its deficit to 19-10 on Lakiah Hyson's jumper at the 5:27 mark.
The Spartans were still within nine at 23-14, before Brown sparked a 9-3 Liberty burst with seven points and a steal. Her theft led to Amber Mays' layup, which gave the Lady Flames their largest lead of the opening half, 32-17.
UNC Greensboro then scored the stanza's final four markers, cutting Liberty's halftime advantage to 11 points, 32-21.
Aided by 20 points in the paint, Liberty shot 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field during the opening 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the Spartans ended up at 36 percent (9-of-25) after their slow start. However, UNCG made only two of its eight first-half free throw tries.
Liberty outrebounded the Spartans by a 19-14 margin in the first half and came up with 11 steals. Leading the charge in both categories was Brown, who complemented her 18 opening-half points with five boards and a trio of steals.
Kylee Beecher, one of three Lady Flames to notch four points before the intermission, added a matching number of rebounds.
Leigh, who began her career at Big South member Winthrop, scored a team-high five points, while Monique Floyd led UNCG with three caroms.
The Spartans emerged from the locker room with a 7-3 surge. Hyson's triple at 16:51 closed the run, bringing her team to within 35-28.
Another UNCG three-pointer, by Dayshaun Richbow at 12:58, again cut Liberty's edge to seven, 41-34. However, the Spartans did not make their next field goal until a Leigh three-pointer 7:36 later.
By that time, Liberty had opened up a 54-38 advantage with a 13-4 run. Mays contributed five points to the surge, which wrapped up with her layup at the 6:58 mark.
UNC Greensboro got no closer than 13 the rest of the evening, as Liberty finished off a 60-42 victory in its first home game against the Spartans since the 1997 Big South Championship title contest. That day, the Lady Flames won the first of their 12 conference championships in the last 13 seasons.
Liberty shot a solid 49 percent (24-of-49) from the field for the contest and won the rebounding battle, 40-35. The Lady Flames also controlled the paint, scoring 40 points to the Spartans' 10.
Brown shot 11-of-15 from the field during her 26-point outburst, while also contributing a game-high nine boards and three steals.
