Game Day Central: Gardner-Webb
No. 16 Liberty begins a two-game road swing to finish off its 2009 regular season slate when the Flames travel to Boiling Springs, N.C., to face Gardner-Webb in a pivotal Big South contest. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., inside Spangler Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs, who come into the game after dropping back-to-back league contests, are out of the race for this year's title, but homestanding Gardner-Webb can still spoil the Flames charge toward a third-straight championship.
Liberty enters the weekend tied atop the league standings at 4-0 along with Stony Brook, the Flames final regular season opponent. Both squads find themselves on the road this weekend, where they will try to move to 5-0 in Big South play. While the Flames are in Boiling Springs, the Seawolves will be make their first-ever trek to Charleston, S.C., to face the Buccaneers at CSU Stadium.
The Flames return to Spangler Stadium for the first time since a 31-0 blanking of the Bulldogs on Nov. 17, 2007, in a game that clinched Liberty's first-ever Big South football title.
Liberty has found much success on the road of late, having won six-consecutive Big South road games and eight out of its last 10 overall games away from Williams Stadium. During Liberty's current Big South winning streak, Liberty's opponents have kept things closer on the road, despite the losses.
Liberty's margin of victory during the country's third-longest active conference winning streak in home games is 31.4 points per game (46.2 to 14.8), which is a 14-point difference (17.4) than its margin of victory away from Williams Stadium (36.7 to 19.3).
The Bulldogs are coming off consecutive Big South setbacks, falling at home to Stony Brook, 24-14, on Homecoming before dropping a 26-21 road game in Conway, S.C., to Coastal Carolina, last weekend. The Bulldogs will be looking to rebound and post their first Senior Day victory since the 2004 season.
Gardner-Webb will be trying to buck a recent trend, as Gardner-Webb has posted a 2-8 record during the month of November since head coach Danny Rocco arrived at Liberty. On the opposite side of that scale, Rocco's squad has closed out each year strong, posting a combined 10-1 record during the same time span.
Before the Flames took to the turf on Thursday afternoon for their final full practice before loading the buses for North Carolina, LibertyFlames.com had a chance to visit with Rocco in this week's installment of the Rocco Weekly Review.
