Madness Ignites Inside the Schilling

Flames fans inside the Schilling Center felt the heat Monday night as Liberty Athletics hosted its second annual Madness on the Mountain. This year, the event featured appearances from the men's and women's basketball teams, head coaches and the Liberty cheerleading squad.
The night's highlights included a three-point tournament between Flames and Lady Flames players as well as a men's dunk contest.
After eliminating their respective teammates in the opening round of the three-point contest, redshirt sophomore guard Jeremy Anderson and Lady Flames freshman guard Jelena Antic met in the finals for a behind the arc shoot-out. In the closing seconds of the contest, Anderson distanced himself from Antic, hitting four consecutive shots to claim the three-point crown.
In the dunk contest, forwards Antwan Burrus and Patrick Konan, guard Bill Weaver and center Carter McMasters were each given 30 seconds to demonstrate their high-flying skills and creativity in front of five judges. The panel of judges included Becki Falwell (wife of Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr.), Donna Barber (wife of Athletics Director Jeff Barber), Erin Guridy (wife of Senior Associate AD Mickey Guridy), Jennifer Sydnor (cheerleading coach) and Brittany Campbell (Lady Flames guard).The highlight of the opening round occurred when sophomore Jesse Sanders released a ball from the Schilling Center balcony, allowing Burrus to thrill the crowd with an authoritative jam down below.
The judges revealed their scores following each contestant's performance, ultimately setting up a showdown between Burrus and Weaver. Despite donning a makeshift Superman cape, Weaver was unable to match his teammate as Burrus went on to win the contest.
Following the festivities, each head coach addressed the crowd, encouraging Flames fans to show their support throughout the 2009-10 season.
The Flames and Lady Flames tip off the 2009-10 season this Friday. The women will play host to Winston-Salem State at 7 p.m., while the men will travel to Fairfax, Va., for a Commonwealth clash with George Mason inside the Patriot Center at 7:30 p.m. The Flames will then return to the Vines Center the following night for their home opener against Southern Virginia. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
