As the Flames turn toward the latter part of their "bye week", LibertyFlames.com is going to start running a series of video interviews, spotlighting each major section of the Flames' football team.
Today's midyear review video segment features an interview with special teams coordinator Marshall Roberts. Roberts, who is a six-year veteran on the Flames coaching staff, is in his first season as the leader of the Flames "special forces" group.
Roberts has taken over a unit which has quickly become a key cog in the recent successes of the Flames football program. Over the past three seasons, Liberty has ranked in the Top 25 in both punt and kickoff returns, while recording 11 special teams touchdown returns during the time span.
Individually, Liberty has had three special teams players receive national recognition. Return specialist Wynton Jackson (2007) and Dominic Bolden (2008) were named honorable mention and third-team All-Americans, respectively, and long snapper Dan Pope was a two-time first-team All-America honoree (2007 and 2008).
This year, Mike Brown has quickly become Liberty's go-to return specialist. The sophomore, who is listed as a starter at punt and kickoff returner and holder, currently leads the Flames by averaging 22.0 yards per kickoff return and ranks second on the team with an 8.0 punt return average.
Matt Bevins currently is the Flames second-leading scorer, behind Brown, as the sophomore had tallied 32 points over five games (6.4 average per game). The kicker has connected on 6-of-8 field goal attempts, including a career-long 49-yarder in the Flames opener at West Virginia.
