The 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships drew to a close Saturday afternoon, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. With six points, the Liberty men's track & field team tied for 38th place in the final team standings.
The Flames tied Alabama, Bethune-Cookman and Kansas for the 38th position among the 75 teams which scored at least one point. Florida State won its third consecutive national title, tallying 52 points. SEC squads Auburn and LSU shared second place, with 44 points apiece.
Liberty, the only Big South team to score at the meet, finished in the top 40 for the second straight year. In 2007, the Flames tied for 22nd, the men's team's best-ever finish at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
All six of the Flames' markers came courtesy of Clendon Henderson's (Sr., Meadow, Texas) third-place finish in the men's discus final, contested Friday afternoon.
The next meet involving Liberty track & field athletes will be the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which begin this coming Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. The Flames' first competitor will be rising sophomore Kolby Shepherd (Dublin, Ga.), scheduled to participate in the men's pole vault on day one.
