Liberty's Kolby Shepherd closed his freshman collegiate campaign with a solid eighth-place performance at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
Shepherd (Dublin, Ga.) got over the bar at 15-11 on his third attempt to claim eighth place in the field of 13 competitors. The effort finished off a fine rookie season, which saw Shepherd claim the Big South indoor and outdoor pole vault titles and place fifth in the IC4A indoor pole vault competition.
Friday's top two finishers—Tennessee's Joseph Berry and Texas' Maston Wallace—will represent the USA at July's 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Both athletes cleared 17-4.5, with Berry being awarded first place on misses. Wallace had just claimed the NCAA national pole vault championship last weekend.
Flames freshman Cory Reed (Eldred, N.Y.) will compete in the men's 10,000-meter final at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, tomorrow at 8:45 p.m.
