Senior Clendon Henderson finished third in the men's discus final and sophomore Evans Kigen broke a pair of 3,000-meter steeplechase records, highlighting Liberty's efforts Friday evening at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.
On the strength of Henderson's (Meadow, Texas) third-place finish, the senior earned his first career All-America honor and became Liberty's first-ever All-American in a throwing event. His top mark, 192-7, came on the Texan's fourth effort. He had thrown 191-5 on his previous attempt, momentarily claiming the lead heading into the finals.
The only competitors to finish ahead of Henderson on a sun-drenched Friday afternoon were a pair of juniors. Kentucky's Rashaud Scott won with a 199-8 and Virginia's Yemi Ayeni was second at 195-2.
Henderson is the fourth Liberty competitor ever to finish in the top three at the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championship. He joins classmate Josh McDougal (Sr., Peru, N.Y.), assistant coach Heather (Sagan) Zealand and Andrea Wildrick on the short list.
Not to be outdone, Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) cut more than five seconds off his personal-best time in the men's steeplechase final several hours later, finishing 10th in 8:43.77. Running only his sixth career steeplechase race, Kigen improved upon his own Liberty record and also set a new Big South event standard. Of the nine men who finished ahead of Kigen, seven are seniors. Leading the way in a stadium-record time of 8:28.26 was Arizona State senior Kyle Alcorn.
The 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will finish up on Saturday, with the first event scheduled for noon Eastern. CBS will televise the meet live, from 4-6 p.m.
The next meet involving a Liberty athlete will be the U.S. Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held June 20-22 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. First up for the Flames will be rising sophomore Kolby Shepherd (Dublin, Ga.), slated to compete in the men's pole vault on the meet's opening day.
