NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships Day 1 Blog
Liberty's Clendon Henderson and Evans Kigen each qualified for finals in their respective events, highlighting the Flames' Wednesday efforts at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Henderson (Meadow, Texas) wasted little time in qualifying for the men's discus final. His opening toss on Wednesday, which sailed 185-4, held up as the fifth-farthest effort of the afternoon's preliminaries. As a result, Henderson will be one of 12 competitors in Friday's final, where the senior will look to improve upon his 10th-place showing from the 2007 national meet.
Kigen (Eldoret, Kenya) will be a surprise men's 3,000-meter steeplechase finalist to some observers. The 24th-fastest qualifier of the 25 entrants coming into the meet, Kigen's 8:51.87 clocking Wednesday evening placed sixth in his heat and 12th overall. The national meet debutant will run the steeplechase final Friday evening at 8:40 p.m. Eastern, live on CBS College Sports.
Senior Jon Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.), making his second consecutive NCAA national meet appearance in the men's hammer, finished 26th in Wednesday's prelims. His 189-1 heave was not far enough to earn a spot in the event final.
Two-time All-American Brandon Hoskins (Sr., Garden City, Texas) got off to a slow start on day one of the decathlon, which was delayed for more than two and a half hours due to a series of severe morning thunderstorms. However, he rallied late in the day, as the Des Moines skies cleared. Hoskins' 49.59 clocking in Wednesday's fifth and final event, the 400-meter dash, ranked sixth among the 26 decathletes. It also helped move him up to 17th place in the overall standings, with 3,606 points.
The second day of the 2008 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will commence tomorrow at 11:45 a.m. Eastern, with the resumption of the decathlon. Hoskins and the rest of the decathletes will begin their day with the 110-meter hurdles.
